CRUELTY TO" CHICKENS. ORAMMED INTO A ORATE,

A charge of cruelty to chickens was

heard by Mr. R. E. Lindsell, at the Magistracy, yesterday. Three coolies were concerned.

Police evidence was given that the de fendants were arrested at the "Star" Ferry Wharf, as they were boarding the ferry with two crates of chickens, The police officer noticed that the chickens seemed very much crowded in the crates, for their legs were protruding through the interstices of the crate. He had the two erates opened and counted 175 chickens in them. Two were crushed to death by the others and several were in- jured.

The owner said he bought three crates of chickens in the Western Market and employed the coolies to "transport them to Kowloon. He supposed that for their own convenience in carrying the coolies divided the chickens in the third crate between the other two, but it was not done with his cognisance.
