POISONS AND ANTIDOTES, HEART NOT DEAD THOUGH IT CEASES TO. BEAT.

The fact that a heart may not be dead because it has ceased to beat was one of several interesting demonstrations shown at the Royal Institution in Albemarle- street, on April 6th, by Dr. H. H. Dale, F.R.S., in a lecture on "Poisons and their Antidotes,”

The normal pulsations of the heart of a frog were cast on the screen, Then arecanin, a poison made from arecanut, was added; and the pulsation ceased. A few drops of atropin or belladonna, an nutidote to arecanin, was vext, added, and the pulsations of the heart were immediately resumed.

Arecanin is one of a group of poisons" which produce a contraction of the pupil of the eye, a flow of saliva, stoppage of the heart, and a griping of the stomach and intestines. The group also includes muscaria, which is found in the white spotted scarlet fungus that has been the cause of many deaths; jaborandi, that is used extensively for hair-washes;-and certain synthetic substances, such wain, found in animal and vegetable Bodies. To all of these atropin is the natural antagonist, attacking the same structures, but in an opposite sesse.

0.5

Other alkaloids showing similar antagonistic influence are nicotine and lobeline, the latter being used by certain American tribes instead of tobacco. Laburnum seeds had been responsible for very acute poisoning in children, one seed being sufficient to cause serious trouble. The natural antagonist to these poisons is curare, made by the tribes in South America for the poisoning of their arrows, the effect of the poison being to paralyse the motor nerves of the muscles,

lu the Arst part of his lecture Dr. Dale dealt with the uetion of cyanide, and carbomonoxide, the after-damp" of the mines and the poisonous constituent of coal-gas-two examples of poisons that owe. their action definitely to their che mical properties; and with ether and chloroform, which owe their action to their physical properties. The latter two poisons should, he said, have special interest for members of the Royal In- stitution, as it was Dr. Humphrey Davey who discovered laughing gus," and Pro- fessor Faraday who revealed the proper- ties of ether.

HUSBAND'S DECALOGUE.

NEW CAUSE FOR DIVORCE.

Ten commandments which a French man" drew up for the guidance of his wife have led to divorce proceedings and. the dissolution of the marriage: It was the war which induced the husband to make these tubies of the domestic law. When he returned from the front, inured to discipline, he considered that, as be himself had been accustomed to obey orders, it would be a good thing to run his household according to special rules. He therefore, wrote the following ten commandments and presented them to hist wife, informing her that she would be expected to obey them scrupulously :—

L-Your work must be checked every week.

2. Keep an account of your expenses every day.

3-Let everything in the house be in order, cleap, and in good repnir.

4.-Do nothing yourself without my orders.

5-Execute my orders without any dis

cussion.

6. In a word, do your duty as a wife. in the home.

7. Be always polite towards your hus- band: no slang, and no untruths. "

8-Dress simply and in good taste as befits the wife of a modest employé.

9.Never wear dress which thos0 women wear in order to attract men in search of love adventures.

10.-Never bay any clothes without consulting me.

These "sanctions s“ apparently over- powered the woman. At any rate, she did not carry them out, and the husband demanded a divorce. He has obtained
