I believe country stand nationalisation for Ave years. would ruin the country," said Sir Eric, earnestly. I have never believed in nationalisation: I was always against it, and since 1918 I have had two years' ex perience of Government working and Parliamentary working, and no greater curse could ever come to this country than nationalisation of the railways."' U.S. TRADE WITH GERMANY, SOME REMARKABLE FIGURES. Although the United States are still technically at war with Germany, the trade between the two countries is in- creasing with enormous rapidity...
The report of the Department of Foreign Trade at Washington shows that during the year 1920 exports from the United States to Germany reached & total of almost £20,000,000, or nearly four times the total for the preceding, year, and were only a little less in value, than those for the year 1913. In the last case, however, the figures are affected by the higher prices of 1919, compared with those of 1913.
At the present moment, however, Ger- many is the second largest purchaser-of- American cotton, Great Britain being first, and also the second largest buyer of American beef. Germany is only exceed- ed in purchases of American copper by American cotton bought last year by Great Britain and France. Germany was valued at £7,080,746, com- pared with 21,060,088 for 1920. This re- presented 370.071,2681b. weight; in 1013 her imports-of-cotton from the United States amounted to 591,342,0621b.
There is a great deal of conjecture in the business world as to-how Germany is managing to pay for these enormous im- ports. Two theories are commonly held, one of which is that German merchants are making use of credits which they have established, in Heiland and Den mark. In other quarters, it is believed that large consignments of raw material are sent to German manufacturers-under an arrangement by which the finished goods remain the property of the Ame rican exporter, the manufacturer receiv ing a stipulated percentage of the price realized by the manufactured article, as payment for his services.
