A Chinese was sentenced to six weeks' imprisonment at the Magistracy, on Saturday, by Mr. H. E. Lindsell, for a curious false pretence. He told a fellow. countryman that he had a contract for carpentry work with the Peak Tramway Company. worth $150, and showing the respectable profit of $50. He suggested that the other man should finance the enterprise.
The bait was swallowed and various sums, amounting in all to $150, were handed to the defendant, who alleged that he was. using them to pay wages. The sleeping partner, apparently, was very much asleep, for he never took the trouble to. see the job in progress and his suspicions were first aroused as to the defendant's Luna fides through the chat of his neigh 4.bours. He indicated that he desired to see the work, whereupon the defendant made some trifling excuse (to be precise, it was that he had to get a towel from a matshed). The easy-going financier allowed the other man to alip through his fingers on this fimsy pretext, and saw no more of him for a week, when he came upon him accidentally at Tau mati Ferry Wharf.
