NUMBER OF TIED-UP SHIPS. Mr. Yonejira Ito, the now President of the N.Y., is quoted as saying that the world's shipping is now about 30 per cent, more than the pre-war figures, but the freight is about 30 per cent, less. The recovery of mercantile activity thus impossible, unless financial security is restored, trade revived, and obsolete ships are disposed of. He is not opposed to the proposed shipping merger, but says it deserves serious and careful considera
tion.
The number of tied-up, ships of over 1,000 tons groas is pow increasing in Jupan, and big and small vessels now tied up in Japan waters are estimated to exceed 250,000 tons gross. They in clude 118 ships in Osaka, totalling 82,380 tons, 19 in Yokohama and 18 in Kobe Six big ateamers are laid up in the In- noshima Iron Works, in the Inland Sea, ostensibly for repairs.

THE NEW MOTOR VESSEL “JAVA.
The East Asiatic Co., which recently put the motor vessel Ajrika into commis sion, reported on her return to Copen of hagen that she had a most successful maiden voyage. The second 13,000-ton boat, the Jara, was launched at the end of Jamary. She, is 443 ft. in length, with a beam of 60 ft. The full cargo is carried on a drought of about 31 ft. 8 in. The Afrika was built by Burmeis ter and Wain; but this firm has so many contracts on hand that the company de- oided to have her, built at the Nakskov yard. The machinery of the Java com prises two 2,220-i.h.p. six-cylinder Diesel engines, built by Burmeister and Wain. The auxiliary installation, as usual, ig wholly electrical, and power is supplied from three Diesel-driven generators, each of 100kw. The steering gear, cargo winches, auxiliary pumps, and all acces sories are driven by electric motors, steam being provided only for heating purposes. The bunker capacity is approximately 1,500 tons, giving a radius of action of 35,000 miles.
The Java will be placed on the ran to China, then to Australia, South Africa

Judging from the Afrika, the fuel consumption will be. about 14 tons per day, when carrying a fael cargo at: a speed of between 11 and 13 knots. It is estimated that this is "only, about 40 per cent," "of the oil which would be required on an oil-fired steamer of the name size, and “leng than 95,per cent of the coal required in a vessel fitted with coal-fired boilers.
