With the knowledge of this dreadful occurrence and its accompanying circumstances, which had they time, they are unable under their present feelings to particularize, the Council apprehensive, and on sufficient grounds, that the safety of this Establishment is endangered; they therefore hasten to bring this fact under the notice of your Excellency, hoping that following the Example of your Excellency's Predecessor on similar occasions, in October 1840, Your Excellency will be pleased to afford to this settlement and to the subjects of Her Majesty therein resident, the necessary assistance in case of need.
The Council have further to transmit herewith for your Excellency's information a copy of the Protest which they, under this date, have addressed to the Vice-Roy of Canton.
