END OF THE WORLD. CANON BARNES ON IMMORTALITY.
Canon Barnes delivered at Westminster Abbey, recently, another of his" sermons on "The Christian Doctrine of the Soul in the Light of Evolution." For Christ- ians, he said, the fundamental all-im- portant question was, "Does the human personality survive after death? Is the soul immortall" It was important to dissociate the Christian doctrine from modern declarations, which merely parodied the case which said that at denth we passed to a plane where spirit ual clothes, and even spiritual eigara, were not unknown. Human personality could only become immortal by virtue of its spiritual excellence. It is certain," he continued, “that just as life began to be on this earth sq. it will at the same time cease to exist. The whole solar Aystem in cooling, and, viewed as a gigantic top, is slowly slowing down. The heat of the sun and of the earth is slowly growing less. Water on the top of the earth will be absorbed by, rocks; the atmosphere, if we can judge by the moon, will vanish, and the whole process of the biological evolution of the earth will become extinct. There will be left fragment of biological record, which in time will be lost as it travels through space." Evalution was designed to pro- duce spiritual beings, who could survive the dissolution of their bodies and enjoy eternal communion only if they accepted Christ's doctrine of the immortality of the Boul. We could; rest assured that 'all dust would return to the earth as it was, and the spirit would return to God, who gave it...
THE NEW MASKS.
MR. BENDA MAKES A SUBSTITUTE
FOR BEAUTY,"
Four wonderful masks, worn by s dancer in "The League of Notions,” have, been insured, it is stated, for £500 each. They are known as the Benda masks, after the name of the artist in New York who designed and made them.
Mr. Murray Anderson, who came to London from America to produce the new Oxford rovno, said, in an interview with a represenative of The Observer, that he first saw the maeks in Mr. Bonda's studio, and used them in his production of the Greenwich Village Follies." They were Bo successful that it was decided to copy. them for Londen:
One is the mask of a beautiful Oriental f girl; another, very grotesque, was sugi gested by a Javanese doli; the third is purely fantastic, with an enormous head- dress of pheasant's feathers; and the fourth is the face of a flapper, with rose- bud mouth and surprised glad eyes.
The masks are made, not from casts, but from adhesivn paper, and then mould- ed. Compared with ordinary “masks, they are very thin, consisting of no more than three or four layers of paper. - But they are marvellously finished, and cover: not only the face-of the artist but almost Miss Grace the whole of the head. Christie, the dancer, puta on each maak, in turn, and interprets ita character. Her greatest difficulty is to see what she is doing, for the eyes are the eyes of the masks and not, as is often the case, mere alita
....

"The extraordinary thing about the masks,
3,” Mr. Anderson said, " is that they really possess a living quality. The face of the Oriental girl is so beautiful that Mr. Benda remarked that we shall no longer have to find beauty for 'revues, & girl will but have to wear a mask liko this and there you have it. These maska, have besides many possibilities. With their aid one artist could play in one piece many parts."
WOMAN, BRAINS, AND BEAUTY.
Mrs. Florence Daniel, lecturing at the Minerva Club, High Holborn before members of the Women's Freedom League, said that men had succeeded in keeping women in their place by denying that they had any mind. Men let it be understood that women could do things and feel things, but then they could not think things. Their attitude towards their wives was expressed in Kingsley's line, "Be good, sweet maid, and let who will be clever." Even Ruskin advised women only to learn so much natural science as would enable them to conversa intelligently with their husbands. The result of this was that the clever woman. being assured by the man that she had no brain, emulated men,, and started the vogue of the "blue stocking" the woman who wore high collara and scraped back her hair. She soon found, however, that. she could retain her charm while develop jog her brain, and that she was doing to-day The lecturer added that genera tions of brooding, when the right of thinking was denied her, had heightened, woman's powers of observation until it seemed as though she could almost see the invisible.
