RICH WIVES FOR BRITISH
HUSBANDS.
[DY CAPT, FRANCIS, MCCULLADY.}
R193
"A" young Baltie German lady with a large dawry, withes, to marry a young Englishman.
Such was the message that reached a friend of mine here, a young ex-officer now engaged in business. He made in quiries, but having found that the lady wanted the marriage to be merely nominal, and having a fancée awaiting him in Belfast, he took no further steps in the matter.
British and American, husbands are certainly at a premium in this part of the world, partly because girls who marry them lose a nationality, which is only an inconvenience and acquire one with more prestige, which frees them from many restrictions.
The Baltic German, or Balideutscher, hates to be described as a Lett quite as much as a rabid Belfast Orangeman hates to be described as an Irish. Catholic, and this not only for reasons of sentiment and of racial pride, but also because it be does become a Lett the Government of Livonia can exercise much control over his movements, make him serve in the army, and prevent him from leaving the country, for all these new republics inter- fere with personal liberty far more than any Czar ever did.

are even more restricted in their liberties | to be called, the WAR MEMORIAL INSTI- than their brothers; and it is not surpris ing, therefore, that during the past year there have been over a dozen matrimonial alliances between English and American officers (military and. Red Cross) on the ane side and Baltic damsels on the other.
So much for the Baltdeutscher. Tho desire of the Russian young lady of good birth to get out of Red Russia by marry ing an out-going "Englishman is far more. acute because her horror of being under the Bolshevist yoke is greater, and the restrictions on her personal liberty are much more severe.
"And, so I had to marry the Swede.” was the nonchalant remark overheard the other day in a Stockholm, hotel..
The speaker was a young Russian lady who was sipping tea amid a group of distinguished diplomats and their wives.
The remark sounded astonishing, in- credible, but it simply amounted to this,

that in order to get out of Russia as a Hongkong, December 15th/1920. foreign subject, Miss R contracted a nominal marriage with a Swedish: diplo mat who was leaving and was thas able to accompany him. «
The marriage before, the Commissar in Moscow cost her the equivalent of six- pence and the divorce in Finland cost the equivalent of one, and six, so that, the double experience was not so expensive as it generally is in England.
When I crossed the frontier myself, several of my companions were thus married" to Russian ladies. One of these ladies, an aristocratic dame of sixty years of age, had selected as berhus-, band" an English youth, from whom she parted for ever as soon as both left the quarantine station. Another Russian lady a spinster, no longer in the first flush of youth-fell in love with her temporary husband, however, and passionately re- fused to be divorced from him.
"I have never been able," she said, "to get a husband before, and now that I have got such nice young one I'm not going to give him up."
It was only when the Englishman proved he was already married that the lady consented to let him go.-Daily Mail.

COMPANY, LTD. Château, formerly a member of a Chris than order, went into business at Tours, C YONSIGNEES per Company's Steamer selling goodwills, acting as a sort of private detective, managing a matri monial review called Le Kere, healing people who had lost their reason, bring ing young runaways back to the family fold, clipping dogs, and, it is alleged, doing other things which have brought upon him the charge of swindling. The wife of an officer, stricken with remorse, called upon Château, and, it is said, ask el him to banish from her all unholy desires.
According to the story, the alleged sorcerer made her recite several prayers, and, after invoking Saint Michael, annointed her with holy oil. From that moment the spirit of tempta tion besetting the woman disappeared. Unfortunately, her husband heard cer tain things and became angry. In order to calm him the woman thought that he, too, should undergo "spiritual treat ment," and, so that he should be brought to reason, Chateau gave her some holy salt in a little bag, which had to be sewn in the lining of the doubting husband's cont. This procedure did not have the effect desired. Hence the action taken by the husband. All Touraine, is keenly in- terested in the case. There will be a number of witnesses, some of whom, it is stated, will testify that Chateau possesses real and beneficent power.

THE WOMAN- WORKEE.
Lady Selborne, writing to the" Mu chester Guardian," says:-I should like to protest against the thoughtless ancers at the "pin-monoy" woman workers which are so common now in the press. A woman who is suported by her father or husband but whe prefers to work rather than sit at home in idleness is a good citizen. There is an assumption that she must be taking some man's job, as if there were only a limited number of jobs in the world and that men had & proprietary right to then. It
and doctrine to teach our girls that their duty is to be idle. As long as man Or & woman gives value for the wages.
