"BURKE

18TH, 1821.

THE PREPARATION OF A. "' PEERAGE.”

Eighty-one now peerages, one hundred land sixty new baronotcies, and eighteen hundred now knighthoods are recorded in the new edition of Burke." More" than thirty thousand names have also been added to the lists of the various orders of knighthood, five-sixths of them. being in the Order of the British Em- pire.

It is a great volume of three thousand two hundred and fifty-four superroyal octavo pages, and would have been greater still, Mr. A. Winton Thorpe, its editor, said in an interview with a re- presentative of The Observer, had it not beca that it was rigorously cut down in certain particulara whors it was thought that space might be saved.

The work of classification, arrange ment, and correction is never-ending. *** The reason one is able to keep pace. with the very large cumber of changes that are constantly taking place is be esuse, Mr. Thorpe said, a definite method is adopted in carrying out the daily work. Every day all the news- papers are searched for notices.of births, marriages, and deaths. For each of these reported happenings a form is sent to the family concernal asking for con firmation. In this way we obtain sbao- luté accuracy. Each issue of the Gazette is also gone through from the first page to the last for notices of new creations, Every promotions, and appointments. now fact so discovered is on the same day entered on the working proofs of the new volume As this work is never allowed to get into arrears it means that, subject to mechanical difficulties, a new edition of the Peorage could have been published at any moment since the last edition, which was issued in March, 1917. "Of course, there are times when wo get rather Booded out by very long lists of new appointments, but they are dealt with as expeditiously as possible, and are never allowed to interfere with the other routine work.

"In order to ensure still greater ac curacy nearly twenty thousand proofs are sent out for each issue, not only to the heads of families, but also to all collateral branches whose addresses are known. And beyond all this, nearly every professional and amateur genealo gist in the country is frequently writing to us, with the result that the most re- mote inaccuracies are brought to light. It is, for example, no uncommon thing for us to receive evidence, upon the dis, covery of an old family document, that someone who was said to have died in April, 1551, did not, as a matter of fact, die until August, 1552.

The method of preparing a lineage in the case of a new creation for a new entry in Burke is to carry it as far. back as it can be authentically traced, but the strictest evidence is. required before these earlier lineages are printed. We give every collateral living or dend who is or ever has been in remainder to the title. In many of the old families, Burke' goes back in this way to Saxon. times.

it sometimes happens when now trea- tions are made that persons entitled to have their names in the peerage will claim a pedigree which cannot be sup¬ ported by the necessary evidence As *Burke' has always beca regarded as the leading authority in these matters the greatest care has to be exercised that no past history shall be inserted which cannot survive the test of critical ex- amination.

"There are, on the other hand, some persons who desire to see omitted facts which are already recorded and arc, per- haps, something of a skeleton in the family cupboard. Here, again, Burke' is adamant, and will not consent to the elimination of anything which is known to be historically accurate, provided it bus a bearing on the family records."""

LIETING A MAN BY A PUFF.

TRICK THAT PUZZLES PARIS SCIENTISTS.

This is a time, in Paris, for athletic phenomena or "miracles," writes a correspondent in a home paper.

After the strange case of Johnny Coulon, the former American boxing champion, who canot be lifted from the floor if he is allowed to put his hands on the right pulse and the jugular vein of his opponent, another curious case is that of a French boxer named Maurico Lefevre, who, is able to lift a man by puffing on his body.

For this experiment the person to be The lifted lies on his back on a table. boxer stands on ene side of the body and his assistant for he must have an assist ant to do the trick on the other side. He then places one of his forefingers under the shoulder of the man and the other forefinger under his knee. His as sistant does the same thing.

Then the two lifters breathe, with "all the power of their lungs, all along the body, from the neck to the feet. They puff together with a rhythmical accord, and repeat it 20, times.

Lefevre then counts aloud "one, two, three," and the "miracle.” is accomplish- ed, for without the slightest apparent effort they lift the body straight up if with their forefingers, and hold it in that position five or six seconds, about 13 Paninches above the table.

Ato!

Then, as if the body recovers all its weight, it tumbles down on the table, and the experiment can be repeated,

Lefevre and his assistant, have tried the trick on an inert object of the name weight, but it failed. Scientists have come to witness their experiment, and are trying to discover what action the human breath can have on a human body in this case.
