SCHOOL REPUBLIC. SCHOLAR'S PARADISĖ,
subjects, some of entrancing interest to educationists, were discussed at the meetings in connectign with the Conference of Educational Associations" at University College, Gower-street, on January 5th.
A very optimistic view of the prospects of the profession was given by Professor, O H. Prior before the Modern Language Association, particular reference being made to the recent foundation of numer- ous professorships. The present outers against expenditure in education was declared by Mr. E. Young-addressing the Society for Experiment and Research in Education-to be based largely on com- mercial greed.
Some revolutionary theories upon the conduct of schools were onunciated in a lecture given by Mr. E. F. O'Neill, of the Crofthough School, Manchester. Mr. O'Neill described his experience of an interesting experiment under which class instruction had been eliminated and fres choice of subject and self-imposed order had been substituted for timetables and the usual discipline. Class teaching, he declared, tended to make teachers them selves ignorant. Instead of being leaders in thought and originality' they became more and more "old framps." (Laughter.) At college he had wasted a good deal of time, but all the things that stood him in good stead were the things which he learned during the time he wasted. The bitterest thing he could say now was that he had been trained as a teacher. Ho maintained that teachers had merely been engaged in showing children tricks, en- abling them to fill in betting slips, giving the devil a longer arm. He had seen horses adding up numbers on the stage, and he declared that similarly, by the use of apparatus-Miqntessori or any other-one could train a child to do any thing
Illustrations, blackboards, the other paraphernalia were sops given to children to enable them to swallow more
asily.
In the system of education which he described the time-table had gone, the record book had gone, the "strait jacket" deal desks had gone, the "Listen to me and sit still method of teaching had also gone. (Laughter and Cheers.) Was all that was required to-day, he asked,

HALL'S DISTEMPER
THE KING OF WATER PAINTS.
The scientific ideal of a wall covering is one that is not only beautiful, but easy to keep clean,, germ proof, absolutely fast in colour, and when applied a thorough disinfectant. No wall covering, conforms so closely to these requirements as Hall's Sanitary Washable Distemper which has, the important advant, ages of being most economical and durable.
Hall's Distemper is applied with a whitewash brush, saving much in the cost of
labour
It sets hard, kills microbes and varinin, and disinfecta.
Is is made in a wide range of 70 colours, including rich dark sa wall ex light tinta. The colour noved fade, enabling furniture and plctures to be moved about a room without a

were told? What was wrong nowadays. was that people did what they were told, but could not tell themselves what to do. (Choors.) He did not advocate the aboli- tion of authority, but to be of any use educationally authority must be self-im- posed. They could not get internal authority without practising it and accepting all the disastrous consequences of trying to gain it. They must be will- ing to have their school burnt down, knocked about, and smashed up, and they must be prepared for bleeding noses. (Laughter.) They must swallow a lot in order to achieve the great prize-internal authority.
POEM ON A CLOG.
Describing his own, school, Mr. O'Neill said thore was no subject teaching, mast of the blackboards were covered with wall- paper or curtains, and they were some- times used as tables for tea parties. (Laughter.) The teachers did not show the children anything; they did not even show them how to read and write.
The three R's," declared Mr. O'Neill, ** are the three bugbears of the teacher's life." In his school there was full and free choice of subjects. It might be asked: Did the children do no reading, writ ing, history, geography, sewing?" Ot course they did, but everything was not done by all of them. In all doing every thing lay the misery of the school system. The ery of all the schools was the over- crowding of the timetable, and on the top of it inspectora camo in "with fad upon fad. Every sane interest of the child in the world must not be warped. Adults had the controlling power over environment, and that' was where, they were supreme. One result of the system for which he stood was the tendency of the children to acquire greater and He greater powers of concentration, bad seen some of the boys spend a month in making designs. A girl was so inter- ested in an old clog that she spent three days in investigating it, wroto" forty pages about it, and finally wrote a poem on its beauty. The beauty had been there all the time, but the grown-ups " had not seen it. The major portion of the children's work in the school was creation. The manual room was in con- tinuous use. At one time freedom meant that all the boys did woodwork. Now, however, a boy would as readily spond a whole day threshing out a piece of algebra or arithmetic, or investigating an old clock, or a piece of blotting paper as formerly he would have been ready to spend it at woodwork.
In dealing with discipline, Mr. O'Neill admitted that untidiness and disorder, at first seemed to impose a strangle-hold on the system. Private possession, however, came in, and the préservation of their own property eventually produced in the children a desire for arrangement and organisation. Now they had a system of elected organisers; any child could volun- teer for any duty, and he was supervised by a chief organiser, whom he had him- self helped to "elect. One boy, for instance, lent out 1,000 articles in the course of a week, and got them all back— that with children of from 6 to 13 years of age. He was an admirable clerk, but they had not taught him to write or how to make his entries. Summing up the aims of the system, Mr. O'Neill said they were to protect the child from the teacher, the teachers from the head teachere, nod the head teachers from the inspectors-in fact, to protect the children from " whole bag of tricks." (Laughter.) The teachers had to extremely hard, but their efforts were worth while. Freedom was necessary for the soul-growth of the child.
the
Mr. O'Neill, whose lecture was very well received, answered A number of queries. He said that his school admitted apparatus and pictures, but they were being changed and smashed continually. There was no punishment save the punish- ment of forgiveness. (Chsers.) The system producat less bullying and more-coina- radorie owing to the interest of the children in their pursuita.
