Sir Robert, hadzarniinod the prisoner, John Bartlett, neqused af the murder of his sweetheart, Caroline Jervis, and found that his mental stafe was auch that very little pravoention would cause the man to lose his self. control.
Sir Robert, who is consulting physician to the military forean in London and Aldershot, and who has vinted most of the leading mental asylums in Europe was then closely questioned By K Jaistice Darling.
Judge: "There are plenty of people who ought to be certified as, insace whose conduct is tolerated ↑ Yea
Are they any certified, who ought not to be certified should not be to say that. I have bad experience of many thousands, and I have not come across more than three cases of that sort. -

Sir Robert said he did not agree with the law in regard to the Macnaughton case. During the last 50 years we had progressed beyond that
Mr. Justice Darling, in summing up, said the fact that Sir Hobert Armstrong Jones did not accept the law of England destroyed to a large extent the value of his evidence. They took the law from the Bench and not from Harley Street.
We had progressed from the Macnaugh ton. case, bat in law we had not. There were those who had progressed in break ing all the laws of England, but the law ought to prevail, although whether it could do so was another matter..
After an absence of only five minutes the jury found Bartlett guilty, but insane. And he was ordered to be detained during bis Majesty's pleasure.
