THE RIGHTS OF WIVES. ANOMALIES OF THE LAW OF PROPERTY.
MFAwere presided recently at the first of a series of seven lectures on the ceanamic independence of women in the labour market, which are being held at the Women's Institute, B, Victoria-street. They are preceded by an informal reception by the president and members of the National Vaion of Societies for Equal Citizenship.
Miss SMITH pointed out that the present Married Women's Property Act had many. Exws, and it was time that there was a new one, which might be partly on the lines of the present Hill to amend the law in Scotland. A wife's credis at present was obviously limited by her limited liability to pays by will she could dispose only of her separate estate and not of any money. that might be coming to her. The savings from her housekeeping accounts were not laguBy hers. If a child under 1 died, the pru perty went to the father, and a husband was under no legal

to the higher judicial Court a woman, even if she bad 12 children, could not obtain more than 40s. a week from her husband. A married woman was not the legal custodian of her own shildren; she was only the
fact that the father cannot dwest f of his rights i one of the difficulties with which people adopting children are face. A curious anomaly was the fact that few up to 1870 a woman, though she had other rights, had the right to choose her own nationality, but this was takan away when her position in other ways. improved, and she was forced to take that of her husband.
In the House of Commons, on Novem ber 1st, Mr. T. Morison, Lord Adovcate, moved, the second reading of the Married Women's Property (Scotland) Bill. He said that in Scotlarida wile was still subject to the husband's right adminis tration, and all transactions in regard to her separate estate, with a small excep- tion, required his consert. The husband. 'must be called to any suit in which she was, sued, and in general his concurrence was required to any action raised at her instance. The Bill: removed from mar- ried women all disablities at present affect- ing them in regard to their own estates, and placed them in the same position as married men were in regard to their
estates.
Sir F. Banbury asked why the Bill was confined to Scotland. Why was a Scot tish husband who was unable to maintain himself to be supported by his wife, whilst and English husband was not?
Mr. Marrison said that under the law. of England a woman who had an estate was bound to free the parish from the maintenance of her husband. Under Scor tish lawa maried women had been under no such obligation.
The Bill was read a second time..
HOW KINGS HAVE DIED.
King Alexander of Greece is probably the first monarch who came to his end by the bite of a monkey, but the occurrence recalls the fact that even kings have mot death in as gredt a variety of forms as any class of human beings.
Comparatively few, especially in the good old days, were able to lie on their bed as did the Merrie Monarch" when he made to his assembled courtiers the apology, as witty as it was gracious, “I am afraid, gentlemen, I am an unconscionably long fire a-dying.
Prism, the last King of Troy, & venst able figure in the twilight dawn of his- tory, was stabbed by Achilles on the altar of Jupiter. Kerzes was murdered by Artabanus in 405 Bc., and Ptolemy XIL of Egypt was drowned in the Nile while endeavoaring to escape from the Roman legions.
Stranger still was the death of Nitocris, Queen of Egypt. Herodotus relates that she destroyed by craft many of the Egyptians. It was an act of vengeance. Her brother had been murdered, and Nite cris caused an underground chamber to be constructed, and invited thither her brother's murderers to a sumptuous feast. While they were feasting she let the waters of the river into the hall by a secret conduit, and drowned them all. To escape.the ven- geance of the populace the queen throw herself into a room fall of hot embers
