Who is the Judge of Good Taste?
GREAT designer once said: "Good taste. "A Griter and intuition. What about the design of the average motor car? Is it horn of artistic genius or a desire to be different?
TH
It is a question for the motor car buyer to consider. How soon will his car be out of date?
.
Packard answers the question at once. Packard design is fundamental with the car not grafted onto it.
Lines may change, and have. But the character of the Packard has not changed for sixteen years.
At the Packard plant the first principle of distinction is quality, Hand buffed, whole.
hide leather for upholstery," instead of ma- chine buffed "splits." Double thick material for tops. Nickeled bronze fittings, designed and made as jewelry might be. Coach work.. by craftsmen rather than body building by machines.
In the London Daily Mail recently an Englishman paid a tribute to the Packard method of building high grade cars-He wrote: "It is for America an expensive car, but, compared with the same class of car at bome, it is decidedly cheaper."
The fact of the matter is this: If the Twin Six were built in Europe with European methods it would be higher priced than even the most expensive European car.

MICHAEL GRACE OF BATTLE
ABBEY.
STORY OF A CURSE AND A FORTUNE.
The sudden death of Mr Michael P. Gruce; thò Amen'can", millionaire; nt the house of his son-in-law, Lord Tywigh more, in Chesterfield-gardens, recalls the course of a life marked by initiative adven- turs auccess, and romance. He was best known in later gears as the man who took # long lease of Battle Abbey, to which a curiona History attaches.
William the Conqueror built, the Abbey over the spot where King Harold fell A lord abbot ruled there in comfort until the mombytery was dissolved by Henry VIII, when Battle Abbey was granted to Sir Anthony Browne by the survice of two knights' fees and a yearly rent of £12,"
The last abbot is said to have pronounced curse that the owners of it should meet death by drowning. During Mr. Michiel Grace's tenancy of the abbey his widest daughter, Mrs. Herbert Beaumont, "was drowned while bathing with her son near Leghora.
THE YOUR GRACER."
Mrs. Beaumont was one of a bevy of daughter called "The Four Graces." The second, Elena; became the wife of Lord Donoughmore. The third, Margharitas married John S. Phipps, so of the Pitts burg multi-millionaire, Henry Phipps. The fourth daughter, Glady, became the wife of Major Rayment Hamilton-Grace, who was killed in the air.
Micael P. Grace had no silver spoonin his mouth at birth He came into the world. at Queenstown seventy-one years ago under a lowly root, -Machael had a brother, William, to whom he was devoutly attached. When. William ran away from home and sailed for New York as a boy, the lad who was left lamented greatly. William, however, soon since good in the
ouse of Bryce and Co., of Callao, ini Peru, and he sent home for afichael To gether they founded the firm of Grace Brothers, of Lima, became merchant princes, and were able to oblige the Peru vian Government in the matter of convert- ing £10,000,000 of debt.
·PÕPULAR MAYOR.
Not content with their great South and Central American trade. the indomitable brothers estabished a branch in New York. William Grace remained there, and beezma one of the strongest and most popular mayors the city had ever known. Michael' came to England to establish another branch, and found a dynast by force of his character, his wealth, and the charm of his dougthers,
He bought a town house in Berkeley- aquare and a country house in Herta. He joined the Carlton Club. but did not irouble about politics. He devoted himself, after a long life of exertion, to his daugh ters, and society, and was pleased to dis- eover, through the agency of a well-wisher, that he had Norman blood in his veins and that his family was originally called Gros. This probably accounted for his wish to abide in Battle Abbey. TADA N
Either fearing the curse or tiring of the expenditure involved in maintaining an expensive property, he recently abandoned Battle Abbey and took over Lord Airlie's place, Cortachy Castle, for the season of shooting and dear-stalking. Mr. Machael Grace was a keen shot."
**PRICELESS" PONIES.
"Rockabye, a brown pony, by Rockaway, played in the winning team of the Rano lagh War Cup, and many other poloą
tournaments.
Thus the catalogue of Messrs. Tatter. sall's Monday saics at Knightsbridgo, mys writer in a London journal, Rockabye is led into the ring Shall we say 200 guineas?" asks the dulcet voice of the auctioneer. Someone says 200 guineas, and then the bidding jumpa by leaps anl-boundz until Rockabye is knocked down for 660 guineas.
An amazing price for a polo pony, you will say
Not at all a'masing in these days, for the perfect polo pony is not to be bought now, days. Next year" we have to defend the International Cup against the visiting United States team, and we need the finest ponies to enable us to hold our own against Mr. Whitney's tenn, which in all probabi. life will he as adorntly mounted as ever.
But, it is not only the fuminence of the international contests that has sent up the price of panies to double and treble what it wag before the war. Pulo is becoming each season a more popular game, in spite of the fact that it is the most expensive a mun can play. Its popularity is likely to in- crease tenfold in the near future, since the Hurlingham Club-which is to the game what the 31.C.C. is to cricket-bas opened its gates to the general public and allowed them to gaze on the sacred ward and watch fast and high class games. Hitherto | admission to the Lordon polo grounds has beer confined to members and their “a had- ged "friends. letu tenangka
Nowhere else car one see such perfect understanding between man and horse se in a game of polo. The perfect polo peny needs no guidance of rein, no touch of the spur. He follows the ball instinctively, with the "intentners of a foxhound on. ■ hot scent; be twists and turns, dodges and dashes, with the agility of a cat and the speed of a racehorse. He shows an intelli- gence that seems almost human.
That is why a good palo para is now worth a little fortune, for it takes a long time to attain this state of perfection. The “making of a polo pear is a fascinating pursuit. One may buy a dozen ponies “ în the rough." all perfect alike in make and shape, and perhaps on two or three will ever come upto the standard of. championship game, Some will never RO to ball properly, others, will fight for their bead. The exceptions will take to the game instinctively so that their rider will have nothing to do but plan out his | tactics and hit the ballet
If you want to see the competition à good pony evokes go to Tattersall's Yard Yard any Monday.
