MAIL CONTRACTS. STATEMENT BY THE STRAITS GOVERNMENT.

At a meeting of the Legislative Council: of the Straits Settiomenta la week, the Government in reply to questions regard ing the mail contraits and deliveries, made the following statement—

A contract exists'

xists between the Straits Settlements Government and the British India Navigation Company, extended for three years from 12th February, 1920, for carriage of mails to and from India for European and other mails. The contract provides for a fortnightly service between the Straits and India in connection with the Poinsular and Oriental Stean Navi gation Company's mail service between Bombay and Europe.

The Pmail contract service which formerly extended to China, terminated at Bombay us from July 1st, 1917. This contract is between the Imperial Govern- ment and the P.&O. Steam Navigation Company, and this Government has no control over its operations, Peyto ML. Owing to the dislocation of the P. & O service both during the way and, the period of reconstruction, it has not always been possible for the sailings of the B. I. steam. ers to in-with arrival and departure of the P 0. steamers at Bombay

Naviga

The attention of the B. I. Sten tion Company has repeatedly been drawn to the importance of this connection, and the B. I have recently declared their in- tention of causing their steamers to leave Iadia two days after the P. & 0. strives at Bombay. The value of this depends entirely on the P. & O. arranging to arrive in Bombay always on the same day, Fand-the-Government has no control-in that matter. ⠀ From July 1918 to the end of the rear, the average number of home- ward mails despatched, by contract and other ateamora was six per month and a similar number of outward "mails were rectived

.

During 1920, up to the end of August, 34 mails were sent homeward by the B which gives an average of rather more than one per week. This takes no account of mail sent homeward by occasional P € 0, and French mails, d

As regards outward mails, 38, exclud ing a few subsidiary ones have been re ceived during the same period. They leavo London regularly on Friday for Mar stulles. Not all the P. & Os! "calt at Bome bay, and Straits Settlements mails are in some cases transhipped at Colombo and brought on by a P.&O. which has previ ously called at Bombay Every posible. step is taken to casure regularity of despatch and receipt.
