SLAVES OF THE STATE. WHEN MAN WOULD CEASE TO COUNT.

[BY BART KENNEDY.]

Properity and nationalisation do not

INTIMATIONS.

A. D. C.

IN

mix. They are even as oil and water. You DENSANY'S may talk till you are Blue in the face, but

you can do mcen get away from this fact than you can get away from the law of gravitation,

on,

Nationalisation simply means the soft and nice and easy job for those who look It means an army of salaried do nothings. It means a thousand more bosses for the working man' than there are at present And the only reason that some of the working on think it is all right is because they have not put on their think- ing caps. When they do they will see that means eventually slavery. For it inten- sifies the power of the State. It brings in its train a horde of rulers where there is now but one.

Everybody likes to have a nice, soft, ensy, boy job which enrries with it a salary of the comfortable" kind, This is human

nature.

Nationalisation would simply menu that! there would be an overwhelming rush after the soft job. (I should be one of the first in the fish myself.) And there would be discontent and slavery, and-following- there would be révolution and chaos,

TO END FREEDOM,

"1

I admit that according to statistics nationalisation is a nice thing; it wears rony air. But of all the liars that exist the on this earth the statistician is greatest.

The expert witness is at times a worthy disciple of the immortal Ananius, but he is a mere babe in arms when compared with the statistician, The statistician will prove any mortal thing. And the fact that he is allowed to run round loose shows that we are an easy-going, long-suffering country.

There is another point. too, National sation is in reality against the progressive instinct that is in man. The tendency of the phychology of man-taking him in the mass-is in the direction of greater ka dividual freedom. It is in the direction of the decentralising of the power of the State The ultimate expression of the principie of nationalisation would mean the absolute slavery of the individual. The State would become Molochast, terrible, and in

mense.

I do not deny that the present system has its faults. But at least-broadly speak ing-it move in the direction of freedom for the individual-which is the thing best worth having in life,

However, we have hd, an object-lesson as regards this whole matter. Russia has been thrown into chace by doctrinaire re volutionists whose dominant iden is nations. lisation. An enn of blood has been shed, Millions have perished.

It, therefore comes to this; "Bolshevism is only nationalisation writ large-Daily Expresa.

MY THIRTY DAYS' FAST:

The experience of a woman who has starred for long periode, noj as a hunger striker, but on doctor's orders, is related below.

Friends who have visited, Alderman MeSwiney, the Lord Mayor of Cork, now beginning the third werk of his hunger strike in Brixton Prison, are astonished at his condition. He is so much stinger than they expected, and his mind is perfectly clear and capable

During the last twenty years I have fasted on six or seven occasiononce for a period of thirty days so that I am not surprised at what strikes the uninitiated as almost a miracle. In spite of the high le perature usual with typhoid fever, my mind: wasins clear as it is to-day during every hour, of those thirty days, when nothing but water ever passed down my throat,

My first fast was ordered by my physician on account of an obstinato digestive dis turbance when I was about twenty years old. I ate nothing, but was made to drink! a great deal of hot water, and on the third' day of this treatment 1 rose from iny bed and went out for a walk,

During the remaining thirteen days, when I took no food, I led my usual life, visiting and receiving friends, writing and reading, and going out for long drives, but I slept much less than normally,

I much enjoyed those days, although I was often bored by the hours my family spent at meals which had not the slightest attraction for me. I felt daily stronger in both mind and body, but my physical strength was more apparent than real, for I was easily tired after moving about.

Bince those the "starves," as my docter called them, I have often fasted for a day or two to get rid of a cold or a sore throat, but I have not tried the experiment of going without food when in health.

There are many cases of persons who have done so for from thirty to forty days (without injury, but no fast should be undertaken without expert medical attep- tion.-I. v. 8. in Daily Express.
