Facing the Confessor's Shrine in West- minster Abbey stands the famous Corona- tion Chair of the Kings of England, second only in interest to the Shrine itself, and abrost, as ancient. Its presence bere, like that of most of the glories of the Abbey .is due to the Abbey's being the bunial-place of the Confessor, for beginning with the coronation of William the Conqueror on Christmas Day, 1066, all our kings have been crownel alnost, on the spot. hallowed by St. Edward's bones. As Dean Stanley tell us. The Conquerer stood on the verý gravestone of Edwird.
The Westminster Coronation Chair has its own peculiar mesaing and interest, for it was made in the last year of Edward Es reign to enclose the famous. Stone of Scone, the Fatal, Stope,” which was thos to replace the King's Stone at the first ford of the Thames, where seven of the Saxon sovereigns, from Edward the Elder to Ethelred, "were crowned." Mich legend has beon, woven round the Stone of Scane, the most famous tradition being that it is the stony pillow on which Jacob laid his head at Bethel.
