In 1862- the stone records the tomb af John Bunyas in Bunhill Fiskis was poss tared by public nbscrption under the pre- ildebey of the Earl of Shaftesbury There is deed of a new Shaftesbury in the fold, for the recumbent effigy of the notorious enthusiast as the shocked and outraged churchmen of the seventeenth century called hm-is defaced in the most literal sense of the word. The features have been more than obliterated. In place of eyes, nose, and mouth there is a gaping yellow wound in the smoke-blackened stone. It is, fortu nate that the inscription is well preserved, otherwise the memorial would be unrecog nizable.

Hence one can identify the redoubtable Isaac Watts, who has censed from his bee-like busynuss and lies as still as his own sluggord; the old Roundhead General, Fleetwood, who wa Cromwell's son-in law; and Susannah Wealey A tomb which keeps the ashes of several of the Prolector's descendants has been carefully tended, and was repaired a few years ago by the City Corporation,

The winged cherubs of the more pompous styles. of graveyard architecture have not lighted here. The case of Bunyan's effigy is, not the only one which is expressive of an age grown forgetful of the great men of the past. In Landgate-circus there is an obelisk which the people who scurry across the traffic thronged thoroughfare scarcely notice at all. It is a seedy and shabby obelisk. It bas all the stains, with none of the dignity of age, and its top is blunted, so that it has become a broken and useless zeedle.

The Peking and Tientsin Times under- stands that the Consular Body recently considered and took action upon protest formally raised by the Municipal Council to the following effect:-

The Council having been verbally, in formed by the Representative of the Russian Consulate at Tientsin of the intention of the Chinese Government, as verbally intimated to him by Mr. Huang, the local Chinese Commissioner for Foreign
their Affairs, to take under administration and jurisdiction the Ros sian Concession and Municipal Affairs beginning from tomorrow, Beptember 28th, at noon, hereby emphatically protesta before the Consular Body against the following:
(The Council protests against the ad min stration and jurisdiction of the Russian Concesion being at all taken over by the Chinese authorities.
(2)-Against the contemplated procedure of the Chinese authorities amounting to seizure of the Concession in spite of the offer of, the Consul to effect the formal handing over of the Concession on receipt of the corresponding instructions from the Russian Legation in Poking
(3.)Against the precipitated act of seizure of the Ilusian Concession not actually warranted by circumstances, and without timely notification on account of which action the foreign ratepayers were deprived of the possibility of safeguarding! their intereste, forming over 50 per cent. of voles, not taking into consideration those of Russian and Chinese electors:
The Council resolved to submit this pro test through the Russian Consul at the meeting of the local Consular Body.
