THE YANGTZE IN FLOOD. PITIFUL WASTAGE OF CROPS A writer in a Hankow contemporary.
About a week ago I took a trip up river. Going along, I saw that the Hankew and Wuchang bounds were still, a good bit above the water, but as we ascended the river we saw miles of land under water and all the crops on them spoiled. About 6 am. the next day we passed Tsingti," the main street of which was little under water. It is rather a queer sight to see houses grow out of the water, as it were I pitied the poor farmers whose harvest in lost. From here!
Ia
up to Cheng-ling and further again. miles and miles of land are under water. Kien-L-Hsien the houses of the front road stood in about 9 feet of water, and from there upwards for miles just the tops of Kowleang and other crops could be seen, The higher we came, the higher the water socused. Everywhere, the same picture houses half or two-thirds out of water, boats moored alongside, ready to take the inhabitants away the moment they could not eling en langer to their homes. What must be the feeling of the poor, wretches. One when they have to leave their all. wanders that wading up to their breasts in water, they still keep on hoping for the water to go down,
LIVING PLOTSAM.
In Yangsbi the water stood about 2 feet o inches. A little way above two Dogs and a cat were floating on a log, not sure of their destiny. At one place a long fog served as bridge between two houses. Fur ther up a narrow line of diko sheltered green fruitful fields from the river. In places like these one only realists the Timmenso damage done by the over-Boxing of the river. Several farmers were walk- ing along the dike, asking the ship to keep further of that the swell from the pro pellers would not destroy their dikes and their all. Further up a whole crowd were putting bushes and straw on the outside and on the top of their dike to keep it front breaking, Crossing the river above 1-Too the same sight. Farmers walking on the dike, watching for breaks shouting not Lia epe negr,
Crossing-again a lot of people were ro pairing their dike have been called toge As we ther by the sound of the gong. crew noar, they rang their gong violently, asking us to keep ulf. Here and there an the higher places of the dikes furniture, stoves, kongs and all those little odd and ends that constitute a Chinese farmer's home, were stowed, being saved from houses. that were about to collapse.
At Bhasi the people were walking up to their waist in the water and boats were going backwards and forwards across the und to the large dike that keeps the town iry which is considerably below the river level.. I wonder how it lewis to sleep
below water level, üld
Leaving Shes the current was 61 miles strong so that the steamer could make no progress until she sheared over to the other side, into less rapid water, where she started slowly to forge her way abend.
SATISFIED CHALE COOLIES.
In Ichang the current ran near the bund Gmiles, further out in ran stronger, All river navigation seemed to be att Mandstill, no curgo junks or steamers Two of the up-river going up or down, boats were moured on the bund below chang and the il-fated Loong Mow, with bow, dashed in seemed to be no longer than 150 feet, instead of the 210 feet, she is said to be.
The bund in front of the Custom House up to the South Gate, was two feet under water. Lots of people were carried about in chairs A harvest for the chair coolies. It is an ily wind that blows. nobody say good. Landing from the steamer was rather difficult job and prices for landing had risen a long way above highwater."

The soldiers about Ichang in general- seemed to be quiet, though small distur bances were heard of now and again. Going up river in a sampan to see the Gorges, was out of the question, so I deter mined to go over land to have a look at them. I was advised to take sa official with me to see me anfe there and back The usual roads were all under water, and at times I had to take a boat, the last one of which pulled · for over a mile among maine, and fruit trees of al descriptions until I could, land far back of Tien Pin. The walk proved very hard going up and down path, 6t only for goats, at the heigh of 100 to 150 feet above the river, and I wondered that farmers could march these paths with loads, up to 150 lbs on their back. Still the view of the beautiful, though deserted gorge, with all its whirls and swirls, and a nice cool bath, in the clear water of the creek, and the delicious enol drink out of a mountain spring paid for all the trouble,
JOURNEY
THE BETTEN Going back on board was a stil! moro difficult job than landing. We were fald that two boats wore capsized guing along. side another steamer. When my sampan teached the steamer the after end got under the steamer exhaust and would have hom filled in in no time, if had not shoved it toff, getting a ducking while doing so..
Leaving Ichang the ente there had fallen two feet and outgoing down was greatly, quickened by the strong current, so that the steamer was barely 30 hours including all stoppages, in coming down. On the way I saw an immense lot of houses with only the roof opt of the water and etiky question came into my mind as often *before* When will this evil be taken in Juhand and river conservancy carried ont, that inundatima, with their enormous losses be prevented!
Sir Percy Scott obtained judgment in the action against Vickers with regard to royalties About £300,000 was mentioned as involved.
