On Monday night I took a young person. to hear "Madam Butterfly " Lyceum. To the accompaniment of sobs and aighs from the audience the opera developed to the point in the last act when Pinkerton turns up.

In view of the fact that Pinkerton had ruined Butterfly, deserted her, and married an American wife, I expected at least a. little righteous booing from the crowd...

Was there any booing! No! They burst iato applause. They were so glad to see the Lovers reunited once more...

Wo. all went mad when Hawker failed to Brong: the Atlantic, and hardly noticed it at all when Alcock and Brown succeeded.

DE VALERA ASKED TO GO

HOME.

IRISH AMERICANS RESENT HIS INTERFERENCE.

The Daily Express New York corres. pondent wrote on June 20th:---

The Friends of Irish Freedom" de are that they intend to compel De Valera to leave America because of his insistence on trying to tell Irish Americans how they should run their own affairs.

Mr. J. E. Sullivan, acting chairman of the Brooklyn division of the society, de clared at a meeting: It is time for De He is needed over Valera to go home. there He has done as much as he ever will do for the mission which brought him bere. It is not right for him in a week to take over the leader.bip from men who have devoted their lives to the work."

De Valera has issued a long statement answering the charges made by the Gaelic American" and fighting back against Irish Americans who, he intimates; cannot be allowed to dictate in Ireland's affairs. He denies that he misused morey at Chicago which had been inbscribed exclusively for Ireland, and makes the fol lowing extraordinary statement:

"I recently feared that an effort, would be made to "use the power. the purse to make me subservient to the wishes of others than the Irish people. To prevent that policy I asked for an, approriation from my Government giving me and my co-trustees discretionary powers to use Gay- erament funds within specified limite so that I might be free to work untram- melled in Ireland's interest."

NATION ATTACKED.

De Valera says he insisted on s plank in the Republican platform recognising the Irish Republic because "at the Chi cago Convention the possible future policy of the American nation was to be deter- mined, and that policy, in so far as it affected Ireland, was vital to us.”

He makes no comment on his failure to compel the Republicans

con to do his bid- ding, but attacks Americans at inrge, say. ing: I have only one interest to serve. I am here, as counsel for my nation, to point out that it is being wronged by the American nation and to seek redresa of that wrong. The definite wrong is that recognition of the British Government in Ireland by the American Government is condonation of British oppression, in Ire land and support of British Government ia Ireland"

De Valera says he is solely responsible to those who sent him to America and: do- clute; As counsel I must obey the directions of those who sent me," There is no doubt that this lotter will apen still wider the breach between De Valera and Irish Americans, who believe that he, as a half-Spaniard, is squeezing Irish Ame ricans from direct participation in Irish
