that he was omitted to fail for not obeying your order to take his hat off, I deem it my duty as Senior Naval Officer of Britannic Majesty's Ships in China to demand his immediate release and a full explanation of the circumstances which led to his imprisonment, information of which I shall report to Her Britannic Majesty's Government.

Com Illmo Sr. Em resposta à Carta que V. Exa acaba de dirigir-me de bordo do Navio de S. M. F. "Maandcr" surto na Barra de Macao, transmitto a V. Exa aqui junta por copia o officio que acompanhei a Mr. ... quando foi por mim hoje entregue no Conselho do Juiz de Direito, que compete dar ulterior andamento d'aquelle negocio segundo as Leis Portuguezas.
