Junior Sydney there are four yards, of which the most important is the Cockatoo Island yard, now owned by the Commonwealth Gowrnment. This yard formerly belonged to the New South Wales Government and was at first played on general Repair work, docking and slipway; work. Lite out or no new building work was until an order was placed for the constrac
of the light-cruiser Brisbane, and on the hull of this vessel was well advanced when the yard was purchased by the Commonwealth Government. The destroyer Warrego, constructed by the Fairfield Company at Covan, was shipped to Sydney and re-erected at Cockatoo Is land. This work, as well as that on the Brisbane, having proved entirely satisfac tory, appears to have given a fresh im petus to the Australian shipbuilding in- dustry. Since that time.
"light cruiser, the Adelaide, has been laubced, and three destroyers have been completed as well as lightships, launches and other small craft: There are at present ander construction a fleet collier, and a cargo véssel for the Commonwealth Government line of steamers. The former ussel is the first steel ship to be built entirely of Australian material. It is designed to carry 4,000 tons of coal, 1,250 tons of oil and 70 tons of fresh water for the fleet, 10 as well as about 1,000 tons of bunker coal. The principal work of the Morts Dock, Sydney, is drydocking, slipway work and repairs, althought various type of vesseln have been constructed for local owners, and two oil storage vessels were constructed in 1919 and 1913 for the Australian navy.
May 30th, at 11.57-No returns from Morison and Sinclair, another Bydney Japan, Vladivostock and Indo-Coins. firm, are builders principally of wooden ships, and Poole and Steel, formerly of Sydney, have now removed to Adelaide, where they will probably build vessels for the Commonwealth Government line.
One of the most recently constructed yards, and one wihch promises largely to influence the shipbuilding industry in Australia, is that at Walsh Island, New- castle, N.8.W. The yard is situated in
without inconvenience. ----- Each Cazasis bears the name.-

material assistance in the matter of cheap Honkong to Gap Rock production. Dredgers, hopper barges, trawlers and other craft have already been built in this yard, and six steamers for the Commonwealth Line are now in. course Formos Channel of construction. There is ample room for extension, and-a-dozen-berths could easily be laid down if required. The yard, which is under the management of Mr. A. M.
