DR., TEHRY ON BRITISH MUSIC.
TRIBUTE TO YOUNG COMPOSERS.
-A plea for » broader outlook with re gard to the bon which by common consent operated against the inclusion of German comparers in musical performance in tha United Kingdom during the war; ・ Wes made by Dr. B. R. Terry, organist of Westminster Cathedral, at the resumed conference of the Incorporated Society of alusicians, held, ai Nottingham recently.
Referring to the future of British music, Dr. Terry said we ought not to forget that at one time we were the firsă musical nation Ain Europe, both as regarily the artistic merit of the works written and the amazi ing"" bechnique-" shown by the musicians themselves. The one thing that struck him in considering those works of the past was that they were not antiquarian curiosities at all, but real live music, which had been allowed to lie in museums and libraries, and because of that were regarded as being antiquated. From the point of view of technique, compared with Continental contemporaries, we displayed just as great skill, as they did. In Eng land we had composers of the first rank writing music of the highest type. The causes of the neglect of English music at the period when it was Brst in Europe had becz, partly religious and partly positical certainly not artistic After the cata. clyam of the Reformation it „was natural

But there was no excuse for the neglect of it since, that period, an British music was once first in Europe. Dr. „Terry said he seemed to see signs to-day that it was going to take that place once again. (Hear, he37) «No one could haves any knowledge of modern London musical file without realising that in paint. of technique, originality of ideas, in point of view of almost every artistic quality, our own young school oli British composers to-day was superior to that of any other country At the present time we were coming-to-one-second spring in music, and that brought him, to the question of the future of British music as compared with foreign music. examine its armour and constitution, în order to emerge from the rut into which it had fallen. We had become a nation of listeners, we had accepted the foreigners label of uot being a musical nation, and we had lived up to that label ever since. It was time that an attempt was made to get away from the old classical tradition of puplus learning the same everlasting things.
