MILKMAID

While it it, quite true, as stated in the STERILIZED

Pournal of Novianiber 20th, last, that the Japanese have, capecially since the war, very considerably increased their share of the shipping trade in Far East- ern waters, the statement hardly does justice to the important part played by British shipping companies in this trade, and is, inlet, apt to be misleading.

* Chiefly coast and river stäamera. It will be noticed that although the British share has decreased from 30.84 per | cent. 10:37.37 per cent, and the Japanese

shows an increase from 95.10 to 31:51 per: cent, Great Britain stiki Jeans the way, and there is every indication that with a return to normal conditions in the ship, ping trade of the world the British share of the carrying trade of the Far East will once more regain and even surpass its former importance.

THE COASTING TRADE.

ot

The Japanese made strenuous efforts during the war to gain a footing in the coasting stade China, which has hitherto been largely in British and Chinese hands, and they also took advant- age of the shortage of "British tonnage to extendi their European and American. lines. But in the coasting trade we have fortunately been able to hold our own, and we are slowly but surely getting back into the European and American trade.

The Americans are making a strong bid for the Pacific trade, but it is doubtful 1. they have the organization or experience necessary to enable them to compete suc cessfully with the British and Japanese lines.

The Chinese still ecnfine themselves to the coasting and river trades, though attempts are now being made by various native companies to extend their lines to the Straiti, India, and beyond.

FOREIGN INVESTMENTS,

TAX ON EXCHANGE PROFITS. Questions having arisen concerning the liahfiity in respect to income tax upon the large prosto now being realised by companies liquidating their foreign and Colonial investments Mr. Chamberlain has sent the following letter to Mr.'G W. Currie

DEAR SIR-With reference to your letter of the 10th ult. (March) the Chan cellor of the Exchequer has asked me to say that he understands that the income tax position with regard to profits due to exchange has now been fully explained to you by a representative of the Board of inland Revenue Mr. Chamberlain, how- ever, thinks that the following brief sum- mary of the position may be of interest to you wa

Where a company is liable to income tax in respect of any profits, and such profits 'are increased by reason of the rate of exchange, the whole of the profits, includ- ing the part attributable to the exchange, are chargeable with income tax Where particular transactions result in a sur- plus or profit which is not itself taxable income within the scope of the Income Tax Acts," any additional profit from exchange attaching to that surplus or proft in equally outside the meshes of the income

tax net.
