PRESENT TENDENCIES IN JOURNALISK.

Mr. Robert Donald, a leading↑ British Editor writes in the Yawspaper. World,

Within the memory of many working journalists of to-day newspapers belonged chiefly to men who had been born into the profession or who had been brought up in it and rose from the position of repar ters to that of proprietors. In no branch of national life and industry were carcora more open to talent than in journalism, It was a very individualistio profession, profession in which, personality was bound to make itself felt. Individual con- tral strengthened, the independence of the press, gave it variety zad character. The editor-owner took himself very seriously, He felt pride in his position and oberished the powers which he possessed. He valued his responsibility and did not ok to lensen The press in those days was bealthy and conservative: it preferred stability to stunts."

Now individual ownership in the news. paper world is becoming the exception. The old press dynasties are rapidly die appearing After a transition period from individual to limited company ownership we have reached the stage of big combina tions. It is a tendency in all branches of industrial activity, and it was to be expected that it should affect newspapers which lend themselves readily to associa tion.

Combinations in the press are of threa kinds. One is due to natural expansion, one to amalgamations, and a third to the incursion of an entirely new type of owner into "journalisuL The impetus for big combinations was the outcome of a new development in catering for the reading public. One man or a group of men started to supply popular periodicals were Auccess!al.

This Blood of popular periodicals which has been the boundation of the greatest publishing houses in the country, and the sources of big magnates' fortunes has added enormously to the number of people who earn their living by their pens Op- portunities have beer given through these byways for new writers to enter, journal- istic life. This kind of variety journalism has been a training ground for young writers giving them an open door which led to new avenues for advancement. The most outstanding figure in British journ alism to-day began his career as a con tributor to one such paper and bas passed on from one journalistic triumph to an- other. Several other great leaders in the press of the day graduated in the same school. +

Then came development when the owners sought, a new sphere which would give them power as well as profit. They entered into daily journalism and have repeated the process of multiple and allied publications in the daily and weekly press. Has the big newspaper combination had a good or bad effect on the journalist

material, sense it has penalted sho journalist. He has been given new and more inviting opportunities. He has had a better chance of specializing and more scope for original writing. By foster ing originality, the combination has strengthened the connecting link between journalism and literature. In a com bination a bright man and good writer may pass from one department to another

from one paper to another until he finds the work which suits him best, and then he can attain as high a position as his ability justifies. While the journalist haa good opportunities for advancement the highest position of all is shorn of its chief glory as there is a power behind the editorial chair which issues orders, which must be followed.

Another way of building big newspaper business has been by amalgamations Papers have been linked together under the same proprietorship both in London and the provinces The effect on the journalist of this system is helpful as he funds more doors open to hit within the same group. Another phase in chang. ing ownership has been the incursion into journalism of businessmen from other branches of industry. Newspapers are sometimes bought for propagandist pur- poses or to serve some other business, in- terest. This system is neither good for journalism nor for the journalist. It is interfering with the real function of journalism. It undermines the freedom of the press: it stops independent criticism.

The tendencies which I have described do not lessen the prospects in the press There to-day for young journalists. never was a better chance than nowadays for journalista to rise from the ranks and reach high positiona The big prizes in the profession are within reach of the gifted. To get in beginners must study the changing conditions in the press and adapt themselves to the needs of the times. The papers of today put no limit to the news province within which the reporter may roam They keep in close touch with life and humanity. They are keenly in terested in people-whether they be gentle socies folk or the horny-handed sona of toil. The tendency in reporting is towarda Brevity and brightness. It is less neces sary for newspapermen to know short hand, there is more demand for them as writers.

Some of the tendencies which I have mentioned are not of an elevating kind, but those are only superficial and transi tory features in journalism of to-day The beart of journalism is sound Thera,

rare opportunities for young talented and ambitious men and women in the news paperworld to day. Looking ahead 1 canT see journaliers rising in power and the journalist assuming a higher status As the world passes from the rule of force to the reign of unfettered democracy: the press will gain in authority, and in in- fluence Closely asociated, as it will be, with the picture theatre, it will reach-all classes. It will be the mentor of the masses The people will distinguish be tween what is wholesome and what is de hasing, between what is true and what is false, between what is sound and what is shallow. Bad newspapers vill die of neglect by the public Newspapers will improve in character and their editore will live up to the responsibility of their to journalism high offico has a great

mission ahead of.
