ANGLO-JAPANESE ALLIANCE. VIEWS OF AUSTRALIAN GOVERN- MENT.

LONDON, May 18th. Speaking at a luncheon of the Empire Parliamentary Association of the House of Commons, the Hon. W. A. Watt Austra lian Commonwealth Treasurer, referring to the doctrine of White Australia and the problem of the defence of Australia, said that, if there were to be conservations in the near future betweep Japan and Great Britain, the Australian Government want ed their views known to British statesmen..

The Times Washington correspondent says that when the Anglo-Japanee Alli- ance is renewed, next July, it is suggested in the United States that provision should be inserted for the more effective safe guarding of Anglo-American reistions. It is also auggested that the scope of the phrase "special interests in Chins should be limited in the lines of the wording of the Ishii-Lansing Agreement. It is urged that special interest should be conceded to Japan in China, only when it is "re cognised as distinctly defensive and based on geographical proximity, and is clearly distinguished from the assertion of par amount political interest."

LEVY ON WAR WEALTH.

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE APPOINTED.

LONDON, May 13th.

In the House of Commons, Mr. Bonar Law said that the Committee appointed to consider the practicability of a levy on war wealth bad reported affirmatively. The Committee suggest that it would be best carried out by the adoption of an Inland Revenue Board scheme, estimated to yield £550,000,000 and affecting 75,000

persons.

The Committee, however, strongly hold that the principle of a levy on capital which is involved is unsound and will barm industry.

The opinion in business circles appears Profits Duty rather than a war levy, as to favour the continuance of the Excess likely to involve less disturbance of indus try.

The Associations of the Chamber of Commerce are strongly protesting against the levy,
