An ainasing story came to light recently of how cancelled £100 Bank of England notes which have been stolen have been so skifully patched up that the thieves have succeded in cashing them at their full face value,

One of these notes was passed in the batting ring at Newbury races on Wednes day afternoon, writes a sporting corres pondent of The Daily Mail. It is only one of many ingenionaty faked notes which have been cashed in the belief that they were perfectly good ones, and the prob abilny is that thousands of pounds have been netted by the authors of the plot.
The details of these extansive fraud, arS of a very remarkable nature, adds the correspondent.
Before the war su bank-notes on being returned to the Bank of England were cancelled and went to a paper factory to be reduced to pulp for conversion into ner votes. The cancellation was done by tearing of the lower right-hand corner of thenates and perforating three or four holes the centre.

The fruer torn off had been carefully replac by a corner taken from a note of algwealue-probably £10 and the per- forateddies filed in with bank-note paper so neat as almost to defy detection.
Pro measures were taken to check the tr from reaching larger dimen sions, it is safe to assume that it would dow possible for anyone to cash one of thepotes at a bank.
Appntly, however, they are being passed race meetings, and possibly amontadespeople.
