THE MODERN GIRL'S ANSWER

The question of whether the modern girl is less charming than her mid-Victorian nister seems a discussion on definitions (writes DE-Filey in the Daily Expres), Need one simpar, faint and, bo, out- wardly demure to be feminine Must one. live in a world of ignorance, petted, poilt. and having only half the intell zent attention of mankind to be possessed of truly feminine charm

The supposition is almost ridienlons when one considers that the essence of feminine charm is sympathy.

IDEALA: AND IDEAS.

The twentieth-century girl has her! ideal of man and marriage, but she has her views on careers, too. Abe in effi cient, and would sooner remain working at that in which she is genuinely in- terested than abside gracefully into be coming the housekeeper of whichever man come along...

With there views has any one the right or the appalling audacity to call any. woman nganted ***

The thinking girl of to any cannot see marriage as an end in itself; only mar riage with the right man as a desirable bhing. That is why she stands proudly for making the most magnificent mate wife and mother. She realises that. H is degrading to angle for everman, bat over his character or personality. Is she to be considered by the world “ unvant- ed because she has not caught a las band 7: Or. still worse, should she accept any man who asks her just because the insensitive would consider her a failure if she did not manage to get somebody 7

What a loathsome idea!

She knows with her feminine charm of old days and her independence of the new that she may have her chance of her mate being revealed to her, but she would choose ber freedom, and self-respect and

life work rather than an soulless marriage an unhappy of Tes, nobody will deny that the good. thoughtful girl of to-day has spirit. This she proved throughout the war, and she in showing it in the world where she is now striving to take her splendid "place as a loyal citizen. If she connot have the joy of a happy life-tomradeship, she knows there are other interests in life: She has the power to be an intelligent member of the community without losing the strength, truth, and beants of her womanliness,

The Singapore Free Press of the 9th: mst. saya

The second airman from Europe to call | at Singapore on his flight to Australia is Caps Matthews, who landed yesterday afternoon at the Race Course in his Sop- with fachine, alter having experienced the porest Biala when, he first set out on. this flight. It will be remembered that Capt. Matthews' intcntion was to com- Dele in the 12.000 miles flight from " Britain to Australia Idriswhich a prize of £10,000 had been offered by the Com- monwealth Government since won by Bir Ross Smith Matthews actually started earlier than Rose Sufith, but owing to landing in our former enemy's territory and enforced confinement there, the time limit of thirty days had been passed. As Capt. Matthews pointed out, he is a member of the Larkin Sopwith Machine Company of Australia, far more interest. ed in demonstrating the utility of tho ingle-engined aeroplane for long distance fights of this character, than the thought of wigning any prize Capt. Matthews and his mechanic Thomas Kay have had a peculiarly tough time of it since they left England in the latter part of Octo ber last. They left Hounslow, on October 21st, renched Colazne the same day, where

Subsequently they made their way across Europe and were next reported at Karachi on March, 3rd, from Jaak, here the machine had a forced Ianding ten days previously and for thres days was on the beach, being washed over by the tea at high tide He reached Bangkok on March 30th, and owing to the illness of his metranie stopped there till Wednesday Jast, when he made for Binggora and layed there the night.

They resumed the journey at 7 am swerdas for Singapore and landed at course, exactly at 1:05 p.m.HE. Major General Sir Dudley Ridout was one of the first to greet Capt. Matthew S. and extend to him Singapore's welcome

Our representative was told, at an-in- terview that they started from Bingapore at 7 3.1. and flew at about an average speed of 5 miles per hour. owing to the condition of the propeller, which is ss the result of a crash at Bunder Abbas The journey from, Singgora was for the most part amooth salling: but for encountering a head, wind.
