Matthews pointed out, he is a member of the Larkin Sopwith Machine Company of Australia, far more interest. ed in demonstrating the utility of tho ingle-engined aeroplane for long distance fights of this character, than the thought of wigning any prize Capt. Matthews and his mechanic Thomas Kay have had a peculiarly tough time of it since they left England in the latter part of Octo ber last. They left Hounslow, on October 21st, renched Colazne the same day, where
they were held up for a fortnight by bad weather and a month. in Mayence for the same reason, taken prisoners in Austria and set free after a short period of detention. Subsequently they made their way across Europe and were next reported at Karachi on March, 3rd, from Jaak, here the machine had a forced Ianding ten days previously and for thres days was on the beach, being washed over by the tea at high tide He reached Bangkok on March 30th, and owing to the illness of his metranie stopped there till Wednesday Jast, when he made for Binggora and layed there the night.
