IS A FOCKET-

KING ALFONSO'S TOUR.

COMING VISIT TO SOUTH AMERICA,

The Lisbon correspondent of the Morni ing Post writes:-

I

...

King Alfonso, in a recent interview, definitely expressed his intention or visit ing South America, and he added and sooner than is expected." It is needless to emphasise the importancy of this visit for the interests of both Spain and the South American Republics. The King's keenness, quick perception, and sympathy, and his close acquaintance with all Spanish problems, makes him an ideal Ambassador between the Spanish Old World and the New

Recent events have combined to give the visit a promise of success to rival that of the Prince of Wales last year to Canada and the United States. The South Ame ricans, whose knowledge of, Europe used to he commonly confined to Paris, and not the real Paris but that of tho foreigner and tourist, have been brought into closer touch with Spain by the war, and being, unable to go to France have visited the Peninsula. They have also found that the products of Spian which they despised are excellent, and, in fact, they had been con- suming them plentifully for years pasl under aften trade mark-French, Italian, and German.

A PROGRESSIVE SPAIN,

The King's visit will, no doubt be the forerunner of, new commercial treaties, and it is all to the good if Spanish trade with South America helps to keep fer- many from resuming her peaceful pene tration there. We have everything to gain by encouraging this and by drawing closer our own relations, not only with Spain but with the Greater Spain beyond the Atlantic We must in future never forget that after English Spanish is the most widely extended language on the face of the earth, and is spoken by a hundred million persons, rather more than less. Of recent years a new bond has been creat ed by literature between Spain and South America. Remarkable' poets from Nien- ragua, Colombia, and other South Ame- rican Republics have added new rhythms, sotincy, and pliancy to Spanish verse,. and, moreover, in the last year or two Spanish books have began to find what they should always have possessed, an 'ex- cellent market in South America...

All this shows that the South American States are beginning to recognise the exist ence of a progressive Spain, which retains the charm of many old traditions but is determined to go ahead with fresh vigour, and the visit of King Alfonso will certain Jy do much to make South America see the error of ita former ways in neglecting Spain.

In the case of engine failure or re while in the air the parachute, in nine cases out of ten, provides the easiest road to safety.

It is true that engine failure does not necessarily imply a 'crash," and it is often safer to stick to your machine than

In my should opinion the onus of responsibility

During the last three months of the war the Germans used this method and economised in valuable lives accordingly.
