“SILVER QUEEN'S"
ADVENTURE,
̈NIGHT PASSAGE OF THE
SALEDALI BİRKAN BAM
It wits an extremely dark night when the Mouver Queen Blandoni ut meliopolia. The machina wae-nok heard” till she was practically overhead. Fresantly the engines were cut off. Then thers, wa 'tinse' silenne, The punchina -Was' magni- Incentiý, mingled, 'anit stopped near the Dangars with the greatest cas, asʻla Ahe linding" worợ sting accomplished in the fali ugnt of day. The airman tumbled out, outed and practically "stone" dent, cheerfully greeting old friends.
Colonel van Rynevela told me (Wroto) Bouter's Cairo correspondent on February 10th) that after leaving Brooklands on February 4th they entered clouds and did not see the ground again for 4 hours. They could not trace thair whereabouts, and therefore they landed on a racecourse, where they ascertained that they were as the village of Modlids. They immediately ascended, and after two hours sighted Mont Blanc, and steered in that direction. It was a beautiful sight crossing the Alps) bus owing to the colossal bumps experi enced in the Italian Alps they had to leave the valley and traverse peaks in order to avoid danger.

AL
The machine landed at Turin & hours)
minutes after leaving Brooklands, Four and a half hours of most valuable time were lost there trying to find some body who could speak English Engine: repairs occupied the whole night, so that the pilots only secured an hour and a half of sleep. They left Turin at 11.30 on the morning of February 5th, passed over Rome at on the afternoon, and tried to make Foggis, but were beaten off by the gale. They then tried for Naples, but were again besten off, and finally turn- ed back and landed at Rome at 8 in the afternoon.
The next stopping-place was. Gioja del Colle, near Taranto. Much difficulty was experienced in securing the requisita petrol for the Mediterranean crossing, because this is one of the Home-Tokyo route stations, and the authorities at first refused to supply more than 350 gallone. The airmen could not start withoutka minimum quantity of 500 gallons, which,
40 gallons per hour, allowed for 194 hours' non-stop flight. They finally secu-. red the full amount after much supplica tion.
Both at Rome and Gioja del Colle the airmen were strongly counselled not to attempt the Mediterranean crossing, which was characterized as a most dangerous, and even mad, venture. But the "pilots. were not to be dissuaded. They left Gioja del Colle at 9.30 p.m. on the night of February 6th on their perilous flight,
***LIKE A NIGHTMARE.”.
It was difficult to get Colonel van Eyneveld or Captain Brand to speak about this part of the fight. They said it loomed like a nightmare before them, and they would never undertake such a crossing again. It was an unremitting struggle against the elements, whic tossed the machine about like a cork It was struggle against the overpowering desire to sleep from abeer exhaustion, and surmounting all was the deadly fear that the petrol supply would not last out. And as if this were not enough, all the lights. suddenly failed, leaving the pilots in com plete darkness except for an electric torch, which they switched on to the compass to keep their course.
J
The weather forecast for the Mediter ranean was good, but half an hour after leaving Gioja del Colle the atmosphere became bumpy and the wind grew stronger, the aeroplane rising and falling 500ft, in a few seconds. Little headway was made against the gale. Indeed, the machine was blown back for an hour and a half at one point. At 4 o'clock in the morning Colonel van Ryneveld relieved Captain Brand. Changing over is always a dif ficult operation, but it was particularly so on this night. In the midst of the storm the machine indulged in most disconcerti ing movements:
Great drowsiness came over the airmen continually to hit his face with his gloves. and Colonel van Ryneveld was obliged to prevent himself from falling asleep, meanwhile switching the electric torch on to Captain Brand's face to keep him awake,
The airmen never saw Crete, which was banked up by storm and clouds. The machine rose to 8,000ft, with her under earrings just skimming the clouds. Fright fu storms were encountered to the south of Crete, and Colonel van Ryneveld said he could not possibly imagine worse we ther. Both men longingly awaited the dawn in the hope of sighting Jand
FIRST BIGHT OF LAND...
At last the dawn broke, and both men say it was the most beautiful dawn they had ever seen." But their hopes of sight ing land were shattered on descending to 1,000ft., as nothing but a limitless expanse of sen, was beneath. The "Silver Queen few an hour and a half before the distant shadow of the land appeared: then spirits quickly revived. They made for the nearest point, and at about 8.20 resch ad the shore and landed easily in a field. A patrol of Italian native policemen gel- loped up and surrounded the machine, but immediately on realizing the situation they informed the pilots of their where abouts. They had landed at Derna after their
never-to-be-forgotten 11 hoate Aight
The airmen then found to their great satisfaction that they had enough petrol to take them to Sollum, in Egypt and they arrived there two hours later. They had the misfortune to strike a stone when land- ing at Bollim, which damaged the tail- skid, king-rost and elevator, also the control lever and operating elevator.) Ca
The airmen left Bollum at 3.5 p.m. on February 9th The Silver Queen" pass ed over Alexandria, then turned south- ward, passing through rain clouds all the time. It was only 15 minutes from Cairo when they emerged from the storm. The sirmen sow a flare go up at Heliopolis, and in the words of Colonel van Ryn veld, both airmen were so happy that they opened a tin of bully, beef to celebrate the occasion, and enjoyed it, thoroughly they were dreadfully hungry.
