She told the Magistrate that it was due to a lover who wanted her to join a secret society. She refused, on various Srounds, but whenever the man visited her he always broached the subject. A few days ago ho told her that unless she joined the scoiaty he would stab her to death. She reported the matter to the Police, but nothing was done to prevents the man visiting her. She thought it preferable to dio by her own hands than at the hands of another.

"Mr. Smith referred the case to the Secre tary for Chinese Affairs for investigation.

FAMILIAR FIGURE IN COURT

AGAIN.

A familiar figure at the Magistracy is Everest Ellapsen, a Norwegian, so ex- ship's officer, who confesses to a weakness for liquor. About ten days ago he was fined $10 and not being able to pay the fine was given a rest for seven days in prison. The day after his release he was found drank in a ricksha and was taken to the No. Police Station, where he spent a night in the cell. When charged on Saturday with the offence, Ellepsen, again made ples, for another chance. He said ho had good British papers but could not got a job legally as his name was spoiled If he was given another chapes he would work is way to Shanghai and never bur den Hongkong with his presence again,
