༈ ! Dissatisfed with the offer made by the leading dockyard establishments of the Colony, in response to applications for an increase of 40 per cent. in their wages, the Chinese engineering atans of the Euro- penn yards and some of the Chinese ship
repairing yards were out en strike on Saturday. As we have already statedh the demand for increased wages by Chinese engineers is not confined to parti cular establishments, but extends to every undertaking" on, which Chinese engineers are employed. The movement, we under stand, is directed by the Chinese Fingi- neers' Guild. The strike, however, is not zeb a general one. Some of the concerns have been given a week's notice of the intention of their men to strike.
We understand that the concession made by the Taikoo and the Hongkong and Whampas Dockyards represente. increase of about 15 per cent, fch the men consider insuficient. The Guid is reported to have a strike fund of about $33,000; but that, of course, would not go far to support a strike on the scale which,
amour says, is contemplated.
It may be that a combination of festivals is largely responsible for the auddenness of the "strikes" that have already occur red. Not only does the Ching Ming festival this year synchronise, with Easter, but the Hunghom folk are also celebrating the festival of the local "joss.
