The health of the community during the Fear under review, although not quite as good as last year, can still be mid to have been good. WATERWORK.

The total consumption for the year: ending December 31at, 1919, was 39,483,100 gations, an increase of 4,929,300 over the consumption for the previous year. The av ragu consumption per month for all purpeace was 2,707,001, an increase "of 332,1 gallons over the consumption for

1013.

During the past year additional houses on the French Concession have been sup plied with Council's water. The water hus beco tested periodically, by the Medical Officer of Health and found to be well up to the standard of purity re quired.

Owing to the increased consumption of water during the past two years, the wear and tear on the pumping plant basa been considerable and during the summer months of the past year the pamps ware running on an average nige boars a day and 18/20 hours a day when Swimming bath was being filled. To obviate this heary and continuous work on the plant and to deal with the probable largely increased consumption in the near future, the Conn cil's Engineers recommend the considera tion of installing additional pumping and Altering plant, the approximate cost of which will be. about £3,000.

The view of Ratepayers will be asked as to the extension of existing plant; and nood of other machinery. The question of expenditure to cover the cost of ad- ditional pumping and filtering plant will be found in the form of a resolution to be placed before the Ratepayers at this Meeting...
