WHEN MAN CUBS TALK. AMERICAN PROFESSORS AND INFANT BOUNDS

„Baby talk, according to American solen-

is not gibberish, but is an intelligent effort to express ideas which have a full meaning, writes J. W. T. Mason, in the, Daily Bapress. When an infant in arma grünts in a peculiar manner any other baby in the vicinity knows what it says. Adults may think the baby is simply ecoing or growing, or perhaps trying to make B nuisance of itsell. But, no; it is. expressing definite ideas in baby talk. It communicating its thoughts to the world at large for those to understand who have a knowledge of a baby's vocabulary.

This analysis of the sounds of infancy, as studied by American" professors, haa been brought to public notice through the discovery of two young boys near Seattle, who were never taught to speak, but who, overtheless, can communicate with each other by vocal sounds The boys," aged teny are described as children of William Kossa hermit. He is said to have lived in the wilda with his children never

speaking to them. The authorities were

children. back to civilisation. Their

mentality was found to be normal, but they knew nothing of the English language They had a code of sounds and signs, however, which obviously was used -tộ exchange ideas.

CHINESE CHATTER

Interviewed about this strange "spon-" taneity of speech development, american scientists declare apeech is something inherent in the human mind, and comes out in some form, under any possible con- dition, as far as experiments show. It is declared that an American baby, placed Leside a Chinese baby and a French baby. will instantly be on intimate terms with them. All three will be able to under- stand the sounds which comprise the aniversal baby's vocabulary

There are at least four fundamental sounds used by babies all over the world. They express comfort, discomfort, pain, and hanger. These are said to be Absolately intuitive with babies. Other sounds are added to this beginning as the baby has need for them. The point is emphasised that nobody has ever given the baby instruction in making the sounds, nor in using the same sounds always to express the same ideas. Professor Richard Garner, the famous student of monkey life; declares that animals have sounds to espress” nightongs, just, na human babies have, but the sounds, of course, are not the same as those used by the babies. The aimat sounds would develop into speech, thinks,

Professor Garner, if the require ments of animals for what they know as comforts and necessities of life were not zo limited.

'SUGAR RADIES. '..

A baby's first pronunciation of "ma- ma, say the scientists, is not really a word: which the baby coins to designate ita: mother. It originates in a sound indicat- ing pleasure and joy, and is built up from that beginning The baby is said to pro nounce thig sound of satisfaction

mub

or ma. After a short time the sound is elaborated into

mub-mah," ma-ma,” ju Than the baby

"happena to be looking at its mother when it utters the sound. It notices the intense satisfaction the sound produces on the mother, and the pleasur able cuddling or perhaps a piece of sugar, which it receives. Association in idens is developed. The baby feels a longing to be cuddled or to have a piced, of sugar, an it repeats the sound, "mub-muh" "ma-ma." When the mother is not pré- sent these sounds do not result so satis factorily to the baby. So they become. associated not only with the ideas of cuddling and sugar, but chiefly, with mother. In this fashion, say the students. of infancy, babies gradually learn to talk

Airship Station

An official of the Air Ministry when questioned on the matter stated that nothing could be said on be matter at present. From inquires made in inter- ested circles in London, it was stated that the news did not come as a surprise. If was obvious that the Government muit mako some uso of these ships sooner drif later, and there was no doubt that a par sengar Airship Service would be a spled- did help to civilian aviation.

The financial side of the question, of courts, presented the most difficulty, but it was thought that the Government would so its way to meet the company who proposed to carry out the scheme. At any rate nothing could be attempted to inaugurate the service before next stimmer, so that the negotiations would have plenty of time to mature, providad they are not strangled with too much red tape in the meantime. There was overy reason to expect that if the scheme proved success the Government would ultimate lebe willing to allow the majority of their existing rigid airshipa to be take over for the purpose of establishing in commercial Air Service which would not Decessarily be confined to this country.
