RANDOM

REFLECTIONS ..... It is no exaggeration, I believe, to say that the annual Race Meeting in Hong- kong has never been marred before. by weather conditions to the extent that the meeting suffered last week. Opening bleak and cold, it finished in a deluge. The absence of the old row of matsheds for so many years a familiar feature of the meeting, was responsible, no doubt, to a greater extent than any other cause for the comparatively meagro attendance of Chinese. The matsheds did afford some or scorching shelter from driving rain aun-both are possible in the month of February in Hongkong-and the new

fero-concrete stands are neither sulli- ciently commodious nor numerous enough to accommodate a tenth of the people who "would wish to use them in any state of the weather. People could not be expect ed to stand for long on the wet grass, exposed to cold winds and rain. Conse quently it goes without saying that the Tramway Company has never had Buch poor returns for a Race Week since the inauguration of the service as it had last week

What a disappointment it must have been to the ladies, too, to have such wea ther in Race Week! All those glorious frocks that the tailors had been so busy upon, as usual, weeks before the event, had to remain on their hangers in the wardrobes, for another occasion-not the next Race Meeting: oh, dear, no.: They will be horribly out of date by that time. Perhaps the early Gymkhana meetings will afford opportunities for a brave dis- .play.

But not everybody was made miserable by the weather. Many came away richer than they went, even if a far greater number cause away, much the poorer in pocket. The cash sweeps appear to bave been as large as usual, and stories about lucky winners" will serve to brighten local gossip for some time to come. There is, for instance, the story of a member of alitue ayrdiexte interested in more than one through ticket, who went to the Races on the first and second days with a little Mascot in his pocket, and saw with joy his Budbere turn up two or three times ach day. On the third day he forgot to wear his Mascot, and his luck was out completely. He took good are not to forget the Mascot on the off day, and bis fuck smilingly returned If the man who went down to the course after three o'clock on Saturday afternoon and picked up two frsts and a third in the sweeps curried a Mascot also—well, all I can say is that I shall provide myself with a Mascot the next time I go to the Faces!

Cynics must have smiled and the religious folk must have been shocked as. they passed through the Cathedral com pound on Sunday morning. Looking across the open porch of the Church they saw beyond it a gang of coolies preparing
