LIGHT ON THE BEND. SIR ULITER LODGE AND EINSTEIN'S THEORY.-
Sir Oliver Lodge recently lectured on Einstein's Theory at 31, Queen Anne's- gate, London. The audience, which at- tended at the invitation of Lord Glencon ner, was a disinguished one, and included Mr. A. J. Baltour, Lord Haldane, and Sir Francis Younghusband (President of the Royal Geographical Society).
Sir Oliver Lodge explained the obectved fact of the Eclipse Expedition, an in- Binitesimal shift óf light rays by gravita tion. It was what arose out of the obi served fact, its consequences on the Einstein Theory of the universe, that gave it importance. Einstein, as one conse- quence of his Theory, had calculated Certain amount of deflection of light by gravitation. Actual observation had
given tgures which, though not coincident with, his, were in an agreement so close that the Astronomer Royal had declared that the results were in accordance with the theory.
In all, the light from seved stars was observed and part of a table with which Sir Oliver Ledge illustrated his lecture is reproduced to show the closeness of the agreement between what Einstein cal- culated and what observation proved."

tions on the deflection of light verified Einstein's calculations on that point. Now the question arose as to whether it was possible, accepting the bending of light facts, to explain them in some other way than by accepting the whole of Einstein's Theory He suggested-it was purely a suggestion that another possible explanation of the bending of the light rays to swice the extent that the path of ordinary matter subject to gravitation was bent, might be this: that the energy of the light ray was one half kinetic and one half potential, so that light had balf-All the inertia of matter and was therefore affected to twice the extent by gravitation. Yet another possible explanation was that the light ray was subject to refraction not only in the cohesional held but in the gravitational feld. They all knew how light was refracted in the cohesional field, the bending of the light ray by water We an example.
