these reasons, it was not possible for the witnesses to look at leisure at what was happening, and one could not expect' a clear-cut story. There was, however, no doubt on the main facts of the case, and he did not think the prosecution would have any difficulty.
On the morning of December 15th, continued Mr. Kemp, at about 4.15, there were only three men on duty on the ground floor.-Speed, Haraam Singh and Ayub Khan. The former was in the office and the two latter were patrolling the corridors. Dealing with the exhibits, Mr. Kemp said that Prisoner 791 had cut out, from the inside, the woodwork of the lock on his door, so that he was able to open the lock from the inside. The four men got out and crept downstairs, where they attacked the three men on duty. Two of the convicts went into Speed's office-Speed was the only man on duty who had a revolver- one attacked Harnam Singh and the other attacked Ayub Khan. Ayub Khan would say that he was walking along the corridor when he saw two men going into Speed's office. He went after them, when he was attacked by two men from behind. One pushed him, and he struggled with the other, (prisoner No. 24). The twomen who attacked Speed were only too. success ful and one of them left Speed's office and came to help in the attack on Ayab The latter was severely injured on the kand and managed to evade another blow with a dagger. By this time the alarm was raised, and his assailants unlocked the gate, lending to the yard and went awny. What key was used no one new The convicts then ran across the yard and through the tunnel, where a warder saw at least one of the convicts who abused him (the warder) as he passed. One of the servants in the

One man jumped over the wall into a street chair. The prisoner in Court was arrested on December 18th. and, on the 17th, he took the Police to the roof of the Club Lusitano bere & knife was found.
