The saving of space and labour on each locomotive was considered by an expert yesterday not to be of so much consideri tion, taken in conjunction with cost and freight, as to balance the ontlay in which a general change from coal to oil would involve our railway systems. The view was expressed that quicker developments in this respect may be looked for in those countries which number oil among their natural resources, and which are largely dependent for coal upon imports.
ADVANTAGES TO SHIFTING.
