"MAGNIFICENT INNINGS BY 2. 3. 1. HANCOCK.
The batsmen had the mastery of the bowlers when the Hongkong Oricket Club met the Navy in a two-days' match com- mencing on New Year's Day. The Club played a capable slaven, strengthening the bowling by the inalusion of Brand and Lammort, în place of Paravacini and McPhail who had played against the Garrison Sutton took Thursfeld's place. The Navy missed that useful bataman, Lieut. Jonen, also Lieut. Casswell
The Navy started badly, losing Kennett after runs had been scored. Hastings and Holl remained together till the score rose to 49 when the former was run out through not grounding his bat in time. Greig, who started with a fine shot on the off for 4 runs at Brand's expenso, did not last long, neither did Helborn, who put up a soft catch to Wood Holl finished a very meritorious innings, in which he hit freely on both sides of the wicket, by cocking up an easy catch to Day off his own bowling. Robinson, who brenght off some hefty hits during his short stay at the wickets, including one from Day on to the Naval Yard roof, why out to a very remarkable, it fluky, catch by Blaker at point. Franks and McNair, in partnership, thrashed the "bowling, the former being bowled by Day "for the seventh wicket when the scora stood at 233 MaNair, who gave a first elas exhibition of cricket, was the last man on his side to get out."
The Club batamen fond no difficulty with the bowling and the falders had a nous time. Wood was out when the HOOTS Was 31, and Pearce failed even to get started. Claxton and Mitchell ooilared the bowling and raised the score to 134 when, Mitchell put his leg in front of a delivery from Bryant and had to go bisk Seventeen runs later Claxton was similarly out after an innings ̈which scintillated with superb drives.
The best cricket of the day was, however, played by H. R. B. Hancock, who was undefeated with 72 run to his credit when stumps were drawn for the day, the total score being 240 for the lose of five
wickets.
