THE SUPPRESSION OF SINN "FRINK
CONVENTION HURRIEDLY
SUMMONED:
Excitement reminiscent of many cris tical days in Dublin during the past few years prevailed again in October last, following the proclamation of Sinn Fein in Dublin City and county by the autho rities and the fact that Sinn Fein had fixed that day for holding the twelfth annual Convention of the organisation. That the Convention had been fixed for the day was unknown generally outside the Sinn Fein movement. Of course, the authorities must have known.”
Many hundreds Sinn Fein delegates from all parts of Ireland reached the eity and as many as it was possible to Inform were informed of the proclama tion and of the certainty that the Con- vention could not be held in the Mansion House. Accordingly, the Sinn Fein head- quarters came to a quick decision and Where they summoned the delegates to Convention shortly before midnight met is not klown, but they did meet, and conferred for many hours.
About eight o'clock in the morning a force of about one hundred. police and [1718 detectives, in charge of a superintendent and an inspector, took up a position out ANDide the Mansion House. In a motor lofry and in a motor-gazage on the op posite side of Dawson Streep one hundred or more, military, fully armed and ne soutred, were placed..

Many Sion Fein delegates who arrived by morning trains put in an appearance at the Mansion House, ignorant, for the most part, of the proclamation. When they saw the imposing force of police Add military against them they quickly departed in the direction of the Sinn Fein headquarters, Harcourt Street, where they were informed what bad transpired. Mr. Arthur Grifith, M.P., met them, went over the proceedings of the mid- nicht Convention, addressed them as be had addressed the. Convention, and they signified their approval of all that took place and was decided upon.
2
It is ascertained that about 500 dele gates, assembled at the meeting place on the shortest possible notice.
No attempt was made to hold a meet- ing or demonstration of any kind in the Mansion Hote, and everything passed off quietly. The military were withdrawn at one o'clock, and returned to barracks. A large number of police also left. About twenty men ware sent to the vicinity of Harcourt Street, and they took up a posi- tion on Stephen's Green about fifty yards from the Sinn Fein headquarters.
While military and police were in Dawson Street An armoured car passer down, Gralton Street and drove throught Goilege Greer, Westmorland Street, and some other leading thoroughfares
Colonel Sir Frederick W. Shaw pre ided at meeting of the Executive Com mettee of the Irish Unionist Alliance to day, when a resolution was adopted im- preming on all Unionists in South-and- West Ireland the urgent need for active preparation for a campaign to place their cause before the electors of Creat Britain.

*TROCLAMATION A SIGN OF WEAKNESA. In his address to the delegates at the Bedre Sinn Fein Convention Mr. Griffith anid the movement had made more re- lative progress during the past year than in the previous year. It was strong as bome, while" Irishmen in America were united as bever before in the cause of Irish freedom. "and American people were largely on the same side. It was prae tically certain that the treaty of the League of Nations would not be ratified by the American Senate, or, if it were, it would be so amended that it would admit the claim of Ireland to independence. " *** ROGTI ** HOME RULE PROPOSALS. The present procedure of the Govern
him a sign of weakness. In all these instances the enemy had played into their bands, and the suppression would have a much better effect in the United States thap even had the Con- vention been held. The response to the national, can appeal from constituents was most enthusiastic, and the methodi taken by the Government to prevent the loan being made public bad had an op- posite effect to that intended. There was some apprehension in the country that the funds subscribed' would be seized by. the British Government, but he assured them that they had taken such measures that the Government would not be able to get at the money.
ment was
Despite suppression, the work of the organisation would be carried on as usual, and the suppression would have just the same effect in Dublin as it had in Tip perary, Clare, or Cork, where the organi sation was more virile that day than it ever was before. There was no danger to the Irish nation as long as the Govern ment kept suppressing. The only danger they had to fear-and he thought that was remote was in the proposals of Home Rule which were being put for ward in order to influence opinion in America. These proposals were mere "eyewish for America to try and in- duce the Senate to ratify the treaty of the League of Nations. The proclama- tion just issued would have, the effect of showing that the Committee on Home Rale was a bogne Committee and that the proposals were bogus proposals are as

England could not keep on without the active aasistionof America Eagland owed America 1,000 millions sterling in national debt, and there was a farther trade debt of 2.000 millions sterling. Next year the Pre- idential election would be held in Ame rica, and the next President would be pledged to recognise the Irish Republic They would then have the same state of that there should be no compromiso ef affairs as in the Presidential election of 1807, when the issue was the freedom of negotiations between themselves and the Cubs.
