Addressing the Church Congress at Leicester on October 15th., the Rev. A. J. Carlyle, Chaplain, and Lecturer in Political Science at University College, Oxford spoke on Christian ideals of citizenship and service in industrial life, with special reference to the reorganisa tion of Capital and Labour on a Caria tian basis and the question of nationall- sation
He said that economists had recognised that there lay at the bottom of all re lations between Capital and Labour a fundamental basis of opposition of in. terests. That was what was called by the Socialists a class war, but that doc. trine was invented by Adam Smith The doctrine was opposed to the Christian faith. The real enemy of Christianity in the industrial world was not "the sceptic who spoke at the street corner; it had been and was now in the industrial Täystem itself.
REVOLT AGAINST MASTERSHIP.
In the industrial world they spoke of masters and men, bat surely we Christian people considered the Christian man & freeman and not a slave. Yet, in the in- dustrial world such had been its organi- sation in the past that the control had been practically antirely in the hands of the employing elames. There was a revolt against mastership. Some basty people thought that this revolt was against leadership, but that was not true.
