ENGINEERING SOCIETY

CHINA.

SURVEY OF SHANGHAI'S PROGRESS

The opening meeting of the 1910-1030 session of the Engineering Society of Chins took place on November 25th, the Royal Asiatic Society's Rooms, S Mr. A. P. Wood, the Museum Boad President, said that it was, at times, useful to take glance backward and to the survey, from the vantage point present, what had been achieved in the past. Thus, they were able to take stock of their position and see where they had gone ahead and what they bad yet to achieve.

Mr. Wood then turned to the conside ration of progress made by docks and wharves and drew attention to the exist- ence to-day of a continuous wharf from the North Yangtze Road to the Hansen Hoad, covering a distance of over two miles.

Dealing with railways. Mr. Wood said that at the time of the birth of the Socie- ty, the only railway existing in Shang. hai was the sorely tried Woosung line which was originally built in 1976, to be torn up in the following year and re- built in 1868. To-day, there were. some 9,500 miles of railways operating in China, but this was a mere nothing in a country with an area of 4,930,000 square milca and a reputed population of 354,000,000

Turning to the local gas industry, "Mr. Wood said that in the year 1902, the gas produced amounted to 173,000,000 cubic leet whereas the production at the pre sont time was 549,000,000 cubic feet per anaum The advent of the incandescent mantle gave this industry a new life, and the advance in efficiency and economy in heating and cooking playing a great part towards fulfilling the growing demand.

Telephones next received attention and Mr. Wood said that in the near future there would be 13,000 lines and 9,000 telephones working in Shangbai. It was of interest to note that the average num bor of telephonic conversations taking place daily in Shanghai was well over 100,000, of which 10 per cent were con- ducted during one hour in the forenoon. Mr. Wood then said that be would deal with his own particular sphere of activity the Waterworks. The supply of water to Shanghai dated back to 1891 and the undertaking was the first of its kind to be constructed in either China or Japan. In view of the aniversal adoption of water supply systems, it was astonishing to note how very few towns in China had followed suit.
