LABOUR'S GREAT

SPELLBINDER

SAM COMPERS CASTS THE MAGIC OF WORDS

[BY. J. T. 3908.

NEW YORK.

A little old. bespectacled than walkedi, down the gangplank of an American, transport in New York the other day to become the uncrowned king of the United States On the first words he was to utter to the reporters depended, in ao en- certain way, whether American organised (labour was to turn itself into a wild mob of contestants in a clusa. warfare, for, whether it was to play a loyal man's part in helping the nation at large to get back to a normas economië basis.

Never and an American come home with more fateful words to utter. It is no axaggeration to say that the whole nation |---working-ingn, middle classes, and capi- calista-listened for big advice with an intensity such as even President Wilson has not commanded. The little, old man. was asked by the ruporters, in their usual phrase, what he thought of the sit aation. He replied: Above all, we must prevent a cataclysm. A great sigh of relief went up from America. Sam Gompers was still on the side of sanity, law, and order.

ENGLISH BORN.

Bam Corpors, aged sixty-nine Every. body who doesn't call him Mr. Gompers calls him Sum or Sammy. English 'born and American educated, he is the stal wart type of Anglo-American who believes in individuality and personal freedom, but who does not confuse liberty with Noenca. For thirty-six years Gompers has been president of the American Fede ration of Labour, Ila has been the ins- pirer of innumerable struggles to secure for labour its ever-increasing rights. He participated in the early struggles of trade unionism in America, add bas watched the movement grow to ita present stupendops proportions. Through it all power that makes mong men drunk came into his hands, but it didn't go to: bis bead. He has always urged labour to Eght with every weapon.it could com mand when the battle was against private interests seeking most of the profits for the stock-holders. But Gompers has never fought agains; the public interests. He has stood like a rock, throughout his years of leadership, against any attempt by the workingmen to emphasise their class solidarity in opposition to the Gov. erment. He has fought against Social- isra, against the ercation of political Labour parties, against the acceptance of Government deles, against every effort to identify the workingmen as a class apart Trom the rest of the community.

MAGNETISM...

It has been continuous struggle. Every year the American Federation of Labour re-elects its otheers, and at every annual convention Gompers, has been compelled to battle with the extreme Radicals in the Labour runka, who have demanded his overthrow as a musty Con servative. But the musty Conservative polled biz majorities of the votes, because the working en knew his leadership was increasing their standard of living. Wearing a black skull-cap on his bald bead, peering at a hostile audience through his spectacles, almost insigni. ficant in size, Gompers has been known time and again to send an audience away cheering and convinced against its will His magnetism, his courage, and his transparent honesty, even more than his arguments, have done the trick.

He was in Enrope when American Labour organisations, a few weeks ago, began to speak through their leaders in new truculent tones of how they were in ne mood to brook" this and that. In- stinctively, eyes were turned not to the White House at Washington, but to Sam Gompers across the sca So urgent' were the calls for his immediate presence in America that he cancelled all his en gagements and returned at once-Daily Express
