VOODOO RITES IN CURA. DISAPPEARANCE OF WHITE
CHILDREN
The disappearance of young white children, who are believed to have been carried off by negroes and sacrificed in Voodoo rites, has greatly excited public opingin in Cuba, and, for the first time since the cessation of Spanish rule, cases of lynching have occurred.
Voodooism has been practised in Cuba ever since under the name of Brujeria the first African negro staves, were im ported as labourers on the sugar planta
It persists tions, about 400 years ago. wherever any remnant of these people is fouad.
Brujería is based on the belief in the power of certain idols to effect cures for physical and mental ailments and to grant requests concerning love affairs and cursos, etc,the believer having to make certain sacrifices,
It is noteworthy that in Cuba the negro utilizes images of Catholic saints and assigns to them the powers supposed to belong to their idols. Where visits bave been made to the houses of these people, sitars have been found somewhat resembling Catholic altars, the images of the saints being dressed in special col ours corresponding to the idols they are supposed to represent, and around are fruits and vegetables, calabashes, 'strings of coloured beads, and the ever-present tam-tom, without which the suhtes are never held. The blending of Christian and heathen practices is astonishing, and the Voodoo prayers resemble Christian prayers.
To comply with the law many coloured societies have been formed, such as in- stitutions for mutual succour, instrac tion, and recreation, But under this cover negroes in many cases have carried on their fetish worship.
In modern times the Brujos" appar- ently satisfied the demands of their deities by the sacrifice of animals either white or black fowls, goats, or cats, etc. although cases had been known where they had taken bodies from cemeteries. But about 11 years ago cases were, re gistered where it was demonstrated that the Brujos were trying to obtain young Since white children for their sacrifices. then a number of young white children have disappeared and it is the general belief that these children have been murdered with the object of taking their blood and entrails for the Brujas witeb. doctors, these being considered, strong fetisbee for the cure of ailments.
Though it has been difficult to prove the charges against any individual-the Cuacrifices being carried out, in remote re- gionseveral negroes have been convict ed and have received heavy sentences; there is no death acntence in Cuba.
In several cases no trace has been ob tained of very young white girls who have disappeared from their homes, but where the bodies have been discovered it has. usually been found that the viscera have been removed.
These outrages, growing in number, greatly excited public opinion, and in of June of

Soon after this occurrence, another case again,excited public indignation." At Matanzas a white girl disappeared, and after some time information was obtained that the body had been buried in the cemetery under cover of night, and upon the body being exhumed it was found to lack the brains, heart, tongue, and blood. Five negroes, known" to be Brujcs, were detained on suspicion of having been implicated in this sacrifice. The crowd attacked the prison, but were beaten off by soldiers. However, the negro lost their lives It appears that they tried to escape and were shot dowo and killed by the soldiers. Since these happenings other negroes have been arrested on charges of a similar charac baz, and raids "have been made wherever the practice of Voodoo rites has been known.
Another remarkable manifestation of Brujería ja now engaging attention, in- quiries being made as to the strange ill- jess affecting some young white women at San Cristobal, Pinar del Rio Province It seems that a white man, godson of negressdoctor, married a young white girl, and three days after the wed ding took her to visit this negross.
