WOMEN IN HONGKONG

One great problem arising from the war, which has been realized and acknowledged to be of national importance is that of the building up of a strong and healthy man-power to replace the terrible wastage of man-life during the last few years, and. In various parts of the world, women have thrown the power at their influence into the question of how best to tackle this problem.

Here, in hongkung, the women sein cun- tent, to accept anything in the shape of hospital accommodation or health hygiene that the governing body of the Colony cares to offer them.:

and

For years individuals have protested against the injustice of “diverting the use of a hospital built for maternity cases, into an ordinary hospital-of sending such cases to such an unsuitable noisy environment as that of, the Govern- ment Civil Hospita. In no other coun try in the world would modern women submit to such condition. Even if their circumstances made them independant

institutions. their public spirit would resens the Ince that others, less fortunate, were obliged to take risks and suffer discomfort and inconvenience at a time of such importance to the race.

The fact that they have no say in the government of the place is unfortunate, and accounts, perhapa, for the utter lack of interest in this matter, but I am beginning to believe that indolence and selfishness are at the bottom of this state of affairs

If the lending women had combined. to arouse the interest of all the other women in the Colony and they had porn sistently agitated by means of petitions. and letters to the Governor and, failing. ni to the Colonial Office, a certaine amount of attention would have been focussed upon their needs and a good Maternity Hospital, situated as ideally as the Victoria Hospital, would have been given over to its proper use

In a former article I spoke of child welfare as a national matter. No one can deny that the basis of child welfare is care of the mother. If we wish to improve the conditions of maternity and child-fife, we must realize, and make our public bodies realize, that the rearing of a healthy race is a solemn responsibility attaching to the community in general.

of

During the late war, statisties proved that the death-rage of soldiers over a period of four years was pot as great as the average searly death-rate of infants under the age of one year. This wastage"

life, although little noticed, is a serious as the wastage of life in war. The baby of to-day is the man of the day after tomorrow, and the British Empire has every reason to be thankful that in most parts of the world under ita SWAY organizations and societies consisting of the most intelligent women and men, are tackling this problem of life preservation, and of the re pop" whole that is necessary as a result of the

Hale

devastation in the ranks of humanity. The foundation of child wel- fare rests on pre-antal care and upon ensuring favourable conditions of birth, though this alone will not save the race. The nrst year of an marant's independent existence is critical, and full of danzer, and every possible means should be taken to ensure that its natural nurse and guardian, the mother, should be given, every chance to emerge from her coD- finement in a fit state to devote her energies to the care of her charge.

It is impossible to overstimate the importance and superiority oi" nature'ą. method of nourishing an intant. France, many years ago, Jean Jacques Housenu started a campaign to make it Lashionable for mothers to return to their duty to-day, doctors and child weltare organizations are trying to do the same thing

Here, in Hongkong, women do not even bother to agitate for proper care at birth, though I have beard them complain of careless nursing and neglect | in private and public hospitals. tittle individual complainta, carried from mouth to mouth, are useless; no one bas the courage to make a straightforward statement tale bearing does no manner

good, in fact it does harm, for it dis counts genuine grievances and allows them to be classed with

the little-tattle

that does not count. If only the women would realize that the most patriotic duty before them is to care for their own and their sex's bealth, they could soon make matters so uncomfortable for the powers that be that those men who have been

One of the brightest shows of the week was the dance at the Peak Hotel, then little affairs are very popular and the: scene in the dining-room on dance nights: is quite brilliant Numbers of dinpor parties, plenty of uniforms and all the youth and beauty of the town and, after wards, music and dancing, until the makes a wild rush to catch the last tram at 11.45 p.m.
