My Lord,

REL

20 April, 1849.

Victoria, Hongkong,

I have the honour to acknowledge the

receipt of your Lordship's Despatch 1985 of

the 14 January last, relative to a money order stated to be for 40 or 50 Rupees belonging

to the convict John Brennan, transported from Hongkong to Van Diemen's Land in 1844.

Having requested Major fane to afford

me the requisite explanation regarding this case, I beg to submit to your Lordship a Letter from that officer with its enclosures, from which it will be perceived that

whatever search has been made in the Records of Judicial, Civil, Military, no clue

can be obtained as to the final disposal of this money.

Right Honorable,

The Earl Grey,

I also beg to state that the burial fee

Major-General Commanding, requesting by direction of the Letter from the Major of Brigade

on the late Captain Ca (osta may

be remitted, as such a charge

for the interment of an Officer is unusual.
