Sir,

In consequence of having suffered for a long time from the effects of this climate, my health is now in such a precarious state that my Medical adviser, Dr. Balfour Jr., whose certificate I beg to enclose, informs me that it is absolutely necessary that I should leave this Colony for some months, but from my extreme suffering for more than a year past, notwithstanding my having undergone every possible treatment, I feel thoroughly convinced that a return to this Colony for years to come, would only entail a return of the several complaints under which I have been and am now labouring.

I have had the honor to serve in Government employ since July 1844.

The Honorable Major Laine, Colonial Secretary,

Census and Registration Office,

Victoria, Hong Kong, 28th March, 1849.
