DODGE BROTHERS MOTOR CAR

Its Goodness is alone repousible for the unusual demand that has existed right from the beginning.

Nothing has ever disturbed the demand for this Car. No outside conditions, no conditions inside the industry seem to slow it up a partick. The people want the Car more intensely at this moment that ever they wanted it before. The Car has reached the stage when its sales are almost automatically increased. By this we mean that one sale is almost certain to result in one or

two other sales.

There is a very pronounced and definite public opinion now in this country concerning the Dodge Bros. Car.

People seem to know that Dodge Brothers' idea, from the very first, was that It is the quality revealed in if they built the Car right, nothing else mattered. its performance which makes the price impressive. People are attracted by something more than price; it is the internal and external excellence which characterises the Car.

The high price it demands when sold second-hand increases the respect in whick the Car is held.

It would be hard to find a truer test of enduring worth. People are not eager for used Cars unless they know that such Cars have before them a long life of satisfactory service.

And so the Dodge Brothers Car is bought, not upon price, but upon the quality and välu: that it embodies,

MODERN LANGUAGES. NATIONAL NEED FOR STUDY

LA Teachers of moderu languages and others interested in education attended a conference at the Council Hall, Spring gardens, on January 22a, called by the Education Commities of the London County Council for the purpose of con- sidering the report of the Committee appointed by the Prime Minister to in quire into the position of modern lang. unges in the educational system of Great Britain.

Bir Cyril Cubb, chairman of the Edu ention Conumittee, who presided, declared thai a knowledge of each other's lang uages was the best method of promoting a good understanding between peoples. The London County Council had been able to give considerable assistance to the at- tatement of this object by the teaching of language in its schools and institutes, and by helping to found professurahips of languages at the London fluiversity, where they had two French professor- ships, two German, vie Italian, and one Russian.

the

Mr Stanley Leathes (chairman of the Prime Minister's Committee) said the conclusions to which the Committee had come might seem to be truismos; but, how- over obvious, they had been neglected in They stated that in democratic past. countries a

knowledge of tangunges was national ecessity, e

well as a profit- able investment The Committee insisted on that, because naless they succeeded in convincing the masses of the people that. auch knowledge was a profitable invest mant, they would never get at the higher results of education. No part of our national aduention not even the part of science--had fallen a far below the standard of national and individual re quirements, as that which dealt with living languages. He believed there would be no dissentient voice as to the paramount importance of French. As to Germany, if it remained an important Dation we should still have to study its language.

The Marquis of Crewe said the teaching of modern languages in the highest form was given apathe Universitica, and the Committee, in their report, drew favour. Able attention to the manner in which the Languages Tripos at Cambridge was Soonducted. What should be attained in the highest teaching was precision with jout pedantry. A great impalac had been given to the studies by the war, and should not be lost in peac9.

Sir Herbert Hambling, deputy-chair- Jinan, Barclay'a Bank, wished, as a com

mercial man, to bear testimony that a knowledge of languages would greatly *assist young linguists in getting on in commercial life. They would get higher Fehlaries and, better positions than those Foot so well equipped.

Dr. R. M. Burrows, principal of King's College, asked, "If we prepare these boys and girls in languages, are they going to get jobs! If not, foreign languages would not be learned. Sir Herbert Ham. bling said they would get jobe, but he Dr. Burrows) know of a case where a rk carefully concealed his knowledge languages because he knew that if he led it he would be kept to corres pondence in these languages, and bie chances of rising would be retarded. He believed inch cases were not very rare. Employers should

I say that not merely one or two but all their clerks must know languages.

The conspicuous part she played in the memorable landing in the early dawn of April 25th, 1926, will be recalled. Amongst the men she had on board were the gallant Munsters, Dublins, Hamp ahires, and details, such as a beach of the Anson Battalion, Royal Pavi Division, field ambulancas, sappers, and signallers. The idea was that she should be an aground, and that lighters should form a pontoon from her "bows to the beach

The Turks withheld their fire until the men surged from the doors in her bows on to the lighters Then a murderous fire was poured into them from machine-
