It must be specially gratifying to you to feel that the last few years of the period qualifying you for this decoration a period which began as far back as the year 1883 should have been the years. during which you were commandant of the Hongkong Volunteer Reserve and the Infantry Company of the Hongkong De fence Corps. Those years covered the whole period of the war, throughout which you have rendered excellent ser vice. I congratulate you.

At the Magistracy, yesterday, be-4 fure Mr. Q N. Orme, a Chinese was

charged with stealing 41 piruls of rice. valued at $500, from a godown in Con- naught Road.

The manager of the godown and a fuki visited the promises on Thursday even». ing and, finding that several bags of rice had disappeared, enquired of a coulio whether he had seen anybody re- move them. The coolie replied that some persony came to the goduwn and engaged him to remove the rice in a truck, paying him fiftoon cents. The Police were informed, and the coolio led them to the defendant's house, where a quantity of the rice was found stored. Further in formation revealed the fact that there were two others implicated in the rob- bery, and they were subsequently arrested and will be charged with receiving stolen property.

Au armed robbery was attempted on Thursday night, at Yaumati, a money- revolver changer being wounded by a shot, fired at him by a robber.

The complainant has reported to the Polioo that, on his return to his residence, 142, Canton Road, after transacting some busincas in Kowloon, eight or ten men attacked him on his door step. One of the men wua armed with a revolver, while three others had daggers. Two of the robbers tried to search him, and the rest attacked his wife and the other occup- ants of the house. Complainant called out "Robbers," and the men, becoming
