MEL. ASQUITH'S DEFEAT.

The defeat of Mr. Asquith in his old constituency of East Fife was one of the sensations of the Election. He deserves well for his prompt decision to range the country on the side of France in those momentous days of July, 1014; but he has had to pay the penalty of acting on his favourite phrase of "Wait-and-sea" in the conduct of the war while he was Prime Minister. He was chased round the constituency by soldiers, who demand- ed why he misled the country by declar ing at Newcastle that we had plenty of ammunition, when, as a matter of fact, there was a shortage and the batteries in France were being rationed with a many shells per day! His plea was that he spoke on reports received from his advisers, but Ministers must always take the responsibility in such matters. Then, again, he opposed the appointment of one supreme commander of tho Allied

Armies without which we should have

lost the war.

WOMEN AND THE VOTE

Another feature of the Election reveal; ed in the returns of the polling is the failure of women candidates to get into Parliament. The only woman returned was the notorious Madame Markievicz in one of the Dublin constituencies; but this lady, who is a Sinn Feiner, and took 4 prominent part in the Duddin Rebel lion, is the wife of a Pole. DRILLS AND CAMPS CANCELLED FOR 1919.

While the question whether compulsory training should be discontinued in Cey len is being discussed, says the Times Centon, the following Defence Force General Order by Brigadier-General R. B. All regimental camps are cancelled for 1919. All corps will fire their annual course of musketry on their regimental ranges for the year 1919 under

der regimental arrangements. (Sgd.) F. J. Tothill, Major, acting Staff Officer, C. D. Fores,

No drills, no camps," said a well- known Major, reading the order a second time. Asked whether he would not carry oui a programme of drills to maintain the efficiency of his unit, he replied with & smile: "Should I hold drills, it is not very likely that they would be attended on the face of this order."
