CHRISTIAN UNITY.
BISHOP OF HEREFORD'S SERMON
TO DISSENTERS.
1919.
CRICKET AFTER WAR. IMPORTANT CHANGES.
TWO-DAY COUNTY MATCHES.
Important decisions regarding the re-
matches were arrived at by a meeting of the Advisory County Cricket Committee in London on December 16th.
The Bishop of Hereford (Dr. Honsly Henson) preached in the Eignbrook Con-gulation of first-class county cricket gregational Church, Hereford, recently, this being the first time in the history, of the diocese that a bishop of the Church of England has delivered the germon in B Non-conformist chapel. The occasion was
united service in connection with the tuman meetings of the Hereford Free Church Council, and there was a crowded congregation The Bishop was acepanted in the rostrum by the Rov. E. Bowen (Congregational) and the Roy. J. Meredith (Baptist).
Lord Hawke, who presided, deprecated drastic action, and himsell put forward a programme of reforms upon which the decisions of the committee were, general- ly speaking, based. Those decisions were as follows:
County matches for the 199 champion- ship to be limited to two days, instead of three.
If one day is wet, the decision to be made under the one-day match rules.
Play on the first day to be from 11.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m., and on the second day from 11 am to 7.30 pm, thus taking advantage of the Daylight Saving Act.
Luncheon break forty-five minutes, and no toa interval; tea or other refresh- ments to be sent out on to the ground.
No Saturday starts.
A proposal to increase the over to Boven balls was defeated, and it was agreed that a minimum of six out and bune matches will qualify a county to compete for the championship.
CUTLER PALMER & CO'S
The Bishop referred to the pamphlet, The Naked Truth," written la his pro- decessor, Bishop Herbert Cruft, in 1678, in which he made an earnest appeal to the authoriting of the Church and the State to cease their persecuting policy, which had brought so many conscientious ministers into cruel suffering and in which he asked Non-conformists to con sider whether the points on which they ld separate from the Church were still in themselves sufficient to justify sepa ration. He (the Bishop) wished that that pamphlet could be re-published at the present juncture, when SO many Lord Hawke said that be feared the reasons were forcing thoughtful Christ majority of the county clubs had been led lans to reconsider their denominational away with the idea that some great position and seriously to ask themselves changes in cricket were absolutely neces whether the time had not arrived for sary.
